Apperently Jon Gass uses on on his 2 mix, quite sucessfully. When I tried it out I was on a rock project. My impression was that it would be better suited for R&B / Rap style of music.

EQ is outstanding. Smoother than buttah. Compressor is the touchiest most frustrating thing I've ever worked with for 2 buss. I've used the comp successfully on bass, vocals and drums using Fletcher's side-chain idea. Here is his post.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
FWIW... with the 747... I generally find the "note" of the kik and the snare with the side chain EQ [with the side chain EQ in the audio path... once I've found the 'note' of the kik and snare, I then remove the EQ from the audio path], and drop the kik and snare notes a couple db from the compressor's detector... then run a few db of gain reduction on the drums... I may add a little sparkle to the cymbals, pull [or sometimes push] a little of the midrange stuff, and will often add a tad of extra bottom to the drums coming from the compressor.

I will return the 747 on an additional pair of faders and blend them with the original drum sound to taste.

Obviously, your mileage and tastes will vary when you set up the 747... overall, I have found this to be an absolutely wonderful tool for the job of "tightening" up the overall drum sound... again YMMV.

As a stand alone mastering compressor-eq, I find it falls short in some areas, particularily the compressor. As one tool in the chain, I like it and use mine all the time.

The high end of the EQ is the sweetest feature of the 747 in my opinion. Avalon should market just that last lever (32khz I think)
as an instant air tool. (forget the rest of the EQ just gimme some air).

I don't like the bottom end as much and usually use it for shelving only.

The tube path is also nice for thickening some instruments.

The EQ is the best part of this box... The comp sucks ass.... it like the 737 comp is nothin special imho given the great name avalon has with most people.............. HOWEVER... when the comp is placed AFTER another compressor such as my fave Al Smart... its a weapon! the faster and punchier the better. Fletcher recommended the API 2500 in that role, i am yet to try it but im sure it would kill regardless.

And yes... Avalon should market the EQ alone!

It's also Michael Brauer's favorite compressor on the 2 mix. I just got one this weekend but I havent had a chance to play with it too much, just the graphic eq a little which is really nice.

I think avalon already has a couple standalone eq's. A regular one and a "mastering" version.
