If you had $1700 to spend on 1/2 of your buss Compressor what would you buy and why
Another words you buy 1 channel(mono) that can be linked Now and buy another channel Later

What two mono compressors are you thinking of putting on your mix?
I'd say trakkers but they're a bit over 1700 each.

| I'd buy a Drawmer 1968 (stereo or 2 channel, good on master buss, killer on drum buss, low cut sidechain switch, tube driven colour when needed/if wanted),
or a TK Audio BC1 (clean SSL clone, but with added slightly more refined up-to-date sound, low cut sidechain switch, wet/dry mix control for instant parallel compression, faster and slower attack times & gentler and meaner ratios than the original SSL),
or a TF Pro P38 EX (4 comp "modes" and very different flavours/behaviours, slamming on drums, has wet/dry mix control and MS stereo center/sides treatment)
- and even manage to save several hundreds in doing so!
Would be a bit wary of 2 mono comps on my mix buss, and knowing it quite well, the (very colourful and odd but versatile) Chandler Germanium would NOT be something I'd use on a mix buss - more of a character, instrument tracking & mixing channel compressor in my opinion & experience.
Kind regards, A
F

good suggestions above, wouldn't buy a mono either if the goal is bus work.. I see that you have some very good mono comps already
Foote Control P3S, Daking Fet III, Roll Music RMS755 would also be on my radar with your budget.
Api 2500, SSL etc. on the used market.

What is your recording medium? If you're in Pro Tools, you can run the inserts for subgroups and use mono or stereo analog comps there, and use something like the SSL bus compressor plug-in via a Duende. It's very effective.

I've tested the TK Audio BC-1. Sounds very good and is not too expensive.

To answer the original question, I believe that Bob Katz still uses two Cranesong Trakkers for bus duties. This would be a versatile pair. I've also heard good things about the Daking FET IIs for this application.

The mono/stereo link thing is great, but I wouldn't want it on a buss comp, because almost no boxes link every parameter, including output, which is sort of a big deal. That said, I've used EL8's linked as a stereo buss comp with great success, but I had to use a signal to line them up, and they weren't very close knob-wise.

Very versatile for stereo buss AND cutting. Why limit yourself to "just for mixing"? I don't own anything that's "just for mixing."

Some comps I'll only use on songs that are in a specific key. See these are the super-secret things that separate the pros from the wannabes.

I only use the nail to compress reverberations panned to 3 o'clock and with HPF set for 400Hz. Anything above or below gets a different comp
