Neve 1271 vs 1272

Whats the difference between these two?

I'm thinking of DIYing a stereo line amp off the schematics for them. The 1271 is a bit simpler so I would probably do that but wanted to check if I'll be missing anything by not doing the 1272.

I think I read somewhere its just that the 1271 has less gain, is that correct? If so, how much are we talking?

Is there a sonic difference at the same gain. Again, if so how much?

Cheers

I think they are exactly the same. I have a Brent Averill rerack, and one of the modules says 1271 and the other says 1272. I don't think Brent would sell them as a stereo pair unless maybe I was scammed. I bought them used, and they both sound identical and the clicks on the gain knob match level-wise when I tested them. They sound pretty amazing. Super Nevey. I can't tell any difference between them. I would say that another possibility is that Brent Averill made the 1271 into a 1272? Who knows, they sound identical and awesome. I run my whole mixes through them and have tested them with stereo tones... I have a nice monitoring setup and the stereo image was perfect, and actually taller (extended bass without a doubt, and more emphasis on the presence range, in a smooth way) wider and deeper when playback went through the Brent Averills... this is coming out of a Benchmark DAC-1 into the Brent 1272's then into a Bryston 3B-ST into a pair of ProAc Studio 125 towers... it really sounds beautiful.

get a pair of the SCA N72's. If you want just power them with a different PSU. They sound fantastic!

Hi

I can't recall the number of times I have posted this.....

The 1272 is a line amplifier with around 36dB gain and either 300 or 1200 ohm input impedance. It was used as a mix bus amplifier and also a talkback amplifier.

The 1271 is a unity gain buffer amplifier with 0dB gain and an input impedance of approx. 10Kohms or 2400 ohms. It was used as a buffer amplifier in the monitor sections of a Neve console.

They are not the same.

You can convert a 1271 into a quazi 1272 by fully populating the BA283 card and either replacing or frigging the input transformer to have similar characteristics to the 10468 in the 1272.

Thanks Geoff... so am I to assume that Brent Averill did the conversion this way in a stereo preamp, completely rebuilt both to match, or that someone has done me in on the used market? Should I get angry? They sound identical, and produce a rather amazing stereo image. The gain matchs, the response matches, the noise matches... what gives? Thanks.

I guess you don't want to comment on another company's products, I don't blame you. Maybe I should just go with your products. I've been drooling for a while... I actually contacted BAE and never got a response... I was really suprised. Not even a "we don't offer support for that product." Simply no response. tutt And here you are Geoff, answering a question you've heard over and over at no charge and in more detail than any manufacturer would. I think I know where my money goes next sir. Thanks.

To the other slutz... no I don't work for Geoff, I don't know Geoff except from seeing his posts on this forum from time to time, he has not solicited me in any way. I'm greatful for his service above and beyond the call of duty. That one response was a real eye-opener. This man CARES!
