Well not really, basically you choose your own path as the board supports the differing variants. Some of them are just a couple of cap and resistor changes.

Sorry for the of topic question,

Can somebody recommend me a comporessor that doesn't make female vocal;s sound so harsh?
What are you using for a mic?

The Distressor is a different animal than the 1176. I'm of the opinion that they are both needed in the studio. With that being said, in this order:

UREI 1176F- (can be a bit noisy but love the sound)

Mohog 1176- very 'musical' sounding especially on vocs. very close to UREI

Purple 77- warmer sounding than the newer UA 1176 but not as smooth as mohog.

I do NOT like the sound of the newer 1176 especially the dual 1176 model but I've met people who love them, so. . . . . . . . . . . .

This is the kind of thread that makes me love this place. Thanks guys. I just picked up a pair of heavily modded BL40's and I have a lovely handmade 1176 clone. I think I am going to add the Mohog at some point.

get a vintage 1176 and call it a day. One of the best moves I have made regarding gear purchases.

Hahah yeah. God Lives Underwater. Great stuff. I've been told I sound like them when I record my own one-man-band tunes. Industrial grunge was awesome... too bad it's pretty much gone. Gravity Kills ... White Zombie...Type-O-Negative was freaking sick too. It's like metal only slower and with synths. Came here looking for reviews of the SE C2S, now I want it... it will match up with my Vintage 1272's quite nicely as a mix/drumbuss processor... totally my style. More modern sounding distortion than 1176's ... I'm excited! And it's pretty cheap too!

You will be happy.

I have 3 other FETS (MC77, BAC500, sebatron nitrous), I like Mohog the best.

You will want 2...try running a mix through with carnhill transformers...if you want a thick balanced sound..slowest attack, quickish release- 4 to 1 or 8 to 1....

I have the ua reissue 1176 with the proper build. I gave the I.j.research (Igor) a try but didn't like it much. To me the Purple mc77 has better things going for it - so I've just picked up one recently. So far I am very pleased with it. Killer on bass, very good on drums, a must for a guitar. The harmonics are pleasing and don't overshadow the signal. For once I don't miss the original with this one.

I really wanted to like the UA re-issue.The old ones often sound different unit to unit. I tried them against an 1178, a Black Rev D , a Black Rev E, and 2 Blue Stripes. Not sure what was wrong but they sounded "boring" . Even fiddling with them, I couldn't get them to do what you go to an 1176 for. It was like going to see a really good cover band. It sounds pretty good, but whatever made the original awesome is missing.

I tried the Purple a while ago and would agree with what everybody else has said. Good on some things, but a little too sizzly on many other things.

FWIW , in case I'm coming off as a "the original is always better gear nerd" The Alan Smart C1 sounds better to me than the SSL 384, the Retro Sta Level makes my old one seem like a one trick pony, and the Retro 176 is an amazing box, and I love it more than the original.

Gear needs to serviced. We have 2 Kulka-recapped 1176's and we re-capped one ourselves. Very well worth it! All three sound great, not dull at all, but with a fine 1176 tone.

They are all good tools.

It comes down to a matter of taste and need.

I have the revision F's.

I find the 77's to be bright and too mid forward for my needs.
My needs will likely fall into the minority, as I want that vintage/old sound.

I only record my own stuff now. Original jazz.

If you are doing rock I can see how the 77 would be a mainstay.

I'm not so against the UA re-issues. The 3A sounds pretty good.
I have two vintage 3A's and yes there is a difference, but not all that major in contrast to the 2 that I have.

That said, my 2 would probably sound slightly different then someone elses.

Urei if you can afford.

VK has a couple up for sale.

That said there is nothing wrong with a distressor.

I am certain that everyone would agree that if you were in a room and all that they had were distressors you could still pump out some exceptional sounds and it would work just fine. There are some things that you would have difficulty doing but you would find another path with the unit.

agree with this. what you miss with the distressors is transformers.

Does anyone happen to know the exact Carnhill output Transformer used in the Mohog?

For some reason the clients who have had a lot of love for their urei 1176 had difficulty getting used to the MC77. I like it and see it as a more open and brighter version. It feels more responsive to me too, although I know the 1176 is supposed to have the same attack times (in microseconds).

I really wish there was an optional front panel for the Slate Dragon. I'd love to try that comp but the dragon design stops me every time...

You are correct, the vintage LN is great, the Blue Stripe always wins in most cases though. I have both, the Blue has the best dirt around.

Horseshit. I've spent untold amount of hours with both, have had more real 1176LN's of every distinction and revision [and more than a couple of "non-LN"s] and the Purple is about as close to my favorite LN's as it gets... no adjustment period, no nothing... plug it in, and it works like you'd expect a well maintained LN to work.

Peace

is it a hum?

if so. it is the input transformer.

swap them out for UTC 0-12’s and the noise will go away.

I got the Dragon racked and you don't see the dragon paint.

PS i never had noise issues with my mohog my Anamod ATS has much more noise and they use it for mastering.
I bet a bluestripe is more noisier then a mohog.

I have owned a Purple MC77 for a while now. I think it's a very good compressor. I don't have any original 1176's to compare, but it works for me.

Mine doesn't make a noise either. The Mohog is a top quality piece of gear.
