AD/DA converters

A question for anyone with bonefide electrical engineering credentials:

I like to keep my life simple - the fewer the boxes, the fewer the cable connections, the happier I am. Thus, I am looking at purchasing a Fostex D824MkII for field recordings.

The Fostex D824MkII uses the following chips: AD:AKM5393, DA:AKM4393. How do these rate? Are they qualitatively somewhere near the Lynx or Apogee?

Constructive thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

John

First let me apologize for not having electrical engineering credentials... so please feel free to dismiss this response with extreme prejudice... but... the chips used for the conversion process have no where near as much influence on the overall sound of the unit as the analog electronics [including but not limited to the "aliasing filter"] and the stability [or lack of stability] of the clock.

Many of these things use the same chip sets with radically different tonal textures as a result.

Best of luck with your search.

Thanks for the input. It goes without saying that the quality in the rest of the chain is important. But I know nothing about the A/D D/A chips. Are these decent chips? What chips do Lynx and Rosetta use?
