first kinda really big purchase...'prom night' for an aspiring gearslut

after reading so many preamp reviews I finally bit the bullet and went for the A Designs Pacifica...plus I'm tired of wading through the endless different opinions on good preamps...(I kinda miss the artistic side of music!)

My main vocal channel will be:

Groove Tubes GT66 -> Pacifica -> Tube Tech CL 1B (next on list to order, in true slut fashion) -> EMU 1820M (soundcard)

(GT66 can be swapped with Blue Baby Bottle or GT55).

I also do alot of acoustic/electric guitar and live bass. Mostly doing upbeat and rootsy REGGAE with soulful lead vocals (male) and 3-4 part harmonies...

Hope I made the right choice with the Pacifica...just kinda jittery right now since I'm destined to become a gearslut, but I just got owned by my first 'prom night'

Best of luck with it.

Being your first... I'm sure you're going to have a great time with it. It won't be your last, and hopefully it will be a tool that will serve you faithfully for your entire career in audio.

So I reckon congratulations for breaking your cherry are in order...

Congratulations.

Speaking of jitter... you should consider investing in some high quality A/D/D/A converters as your next purchase so you can actually record and accurately play back the great sound you are going to get from that recording chain.

Only for you guys, some inside information from a top producer I know.

The EMU's uses the same chip NASA use in their space program. The convertion is top class. He also told me that the EMU's is better than the high end Larveys. He said that people haven't catched up on the EMU's. He adviced me to buy several EMU's because in the future EMU's will be worth MILLIONS (neve standard).... My 2 cents.

well NASA dunno, neve dunno, millions dunno either. a lot of consumer technology ends up now in spacecraft, so it's possible.
But I'm not really NASA (today ) so capabillity to go to Pluto is for the next few months of limited use to me personally. maybe in your case its different.
Also buying a stock of 20 interface cards would seem rather funny, considering I don't have the computer for it. Ppl would think I lost it. and they would be right.

I heard the EMU this summer and yes it is very very very good. I did not put it up against a lavry. but it is rich, detailed and natural sounding. easily on par with my fireface. Project studio technology in earnest! I had a little PC envy (ardent mac user)

why EMU doesn't make a firewire or AES box dunno. maybe same management problems as Sony; not in touch with reality? They could sell a lot of boxes if they make it more universal invest a bit more in hardware like they used to do (when they were not CreativeLabs) and write better drivers.

well i woke up this morning....still a bit sore from the massive 'backside scramble' I experienced last night during my first big purchase...but let me tell you, after reading all the moral support, I'm getting ultra pumped!!!

I'm gonna give the pacifica a solo run so that i can understand it for it's character and personality...once I'm satisfied that I know who the darn thing is...I'm gonna get super agro and make one of the biggest purchases of my life (aside from house, car etc.)...the tube tech cl 1b compressor with some mullard tubes (worth five times more than my purebred dog that came with papers!!)...

Once that occurs, I will be obligated to make first project consist of many multi-layered wailing electric guitars...nothing else just a bunch of thick guitars wailing hard...this will justify all the purchases!!

as for the EMU as a standalone converter...not sure what you mean, but I know it must be hooked up via ethernet to the card in order to get power. There is no other means of gettinig power to the thing. With that in mind, it will perform within the full range of it's functionality...not sure about standalone/adat etc...

thanks everybody...

yo ardy, I listened to the tubetech multiband compressor last week, awesome control. I heard that the rest is good too, but make sure you A/B this new one with other compressors!! and do a search here on GS! I heard some conflicting opinions about that one, but am too lazy now to look deeper into it. (and conflicting opinions will ALWAYS be on GS) so don't be too alarmed, if you like how it sounds yourself, GO FOR IT

what kind of dog?
you know there is a pets in the studio thread?
