Monitor controller

Hey guys, can you suggest a monitor controller to use with a Digidesign 002? I'm looking for a controller to connect: one set of powered monitors, a set of unpowered monitors, and a Furman HA-6AB headphone amp. Talkback isn't necessary and I'm looking for something that is clean and won't color the sound at all.

You didn't mention a budget -

Cheap as hell and effective - PreSonus Central Station.

More expensive and more effective - Crane Song Avocet.

You're right, sorry. I think $3000 might be pushing it a bit. I was hoping to spend about $1500

Yeah, probably Central Station. Cheap, flexible...

I use the StudioComm stuff... but I got a ridiculous deal on ebay for it awhile back.

That's a little overkill for what you're talking about, but check out the other models.

The SPL MTC is what I use with a Lavry D/A and two pairs of speakers. It's very clean, I can't tell any significant difference between the signal monitoring directly off the 2 bus VS the SPL.

The Dangerous Monitor looks sweet, but alas the 002 does not have 25 D outputs...

What is totally ******** about so many of these controllers is that they don't have a remote. So either the SPL is hogging up space on your desk with 8,000 cables coming out the back (like a Mackie Big Knob would) or, you've got the Presonus Central Station that does have a remote, but the audio acutally runs through the remote cable (from what I understand) down to the volume knob and back to the rack, and then to the monitors.

Coleman has no remote either, it sits in the rack with no way to remote it, so your rack better be right next to you.

The ST is the only one that really does do it right in the under $2K price range, and it blows me away that none of these other companies can figure out a way to hook up a remote.

???? What, you never heard of D-Sub to TRS cables? Me thinks you are being foolish........

StudioComm stuff has a nice remote. That's the best part.

The Hear Technologies Talkback 600 MV is a single space rackmount deal, with built in talkback capability / dimming as well as A/B switching.

(Please pardon the spam)

MonitorMAX is US$1,995, has ten stereo inputs, two monitor system outputs, cue system output, TB mic preamp, etc. All controllable from its remote control.

Based on what you've said so far, it sounds like Coleman would have the right combo of features and price that you're looking for.

That acutally looks like a pretty serious contender in the same range as the ST or the Avocet, thanks for that link.

There are controllers with remote. But if the remote is done the right way (no VCA and so on) it gets expensive. You get whar you pay for. The SPL is a bargain but you cannot expect it to have a RC at this price without affecting the sound quality.

Monitor controller

I've been using the Central Station with the remote for 3 weeks now and I'm very happy with it.

Pros :

- A lot of features !
- The talkback is very useful and the mic is very sensitive.
- Very clean and transparent sound.
- Cool little blues lights !
- Wide meters. They can be calibrated.
- No cables running on the desk.
- The remote is heavy enough and with the rubbers included, it does not sliding easily on the deck.
- Not expensive.

Cons :

- The phones outputs could have been much higher ! It's OK for doing overdumbs, but don't even try to get a drummer hearing himself ! (I use AKG 141 monitors)
- It's gonna seem silly but the remote gets dirty very fast. It keeps non-permanent nails scratchs and finger prints very easily. I've got to clean it very often !
After using it 5 minutes, the remote lookes like it was one year old !
(note : I don't eat with my fingers before using it...)
- Wall mart power supply.
- No switch on/off
- When getting low level, the sound goes slowly to the left. But by using the DIM button I'm able to reach a very low level. (At that very low level I can hear the little buzz of my CRT monitor.)

I haven't tried the DA converter yet...

Coleman is an extremely high quality, simple no bs unit. They work great and will serve unless you need lots of bells and whistles.

You SPL 2381/2489 users ... you feel it's clean enough? I know it's not passive, but I'm thinking about getting one as a pose to the colemans, cause I can get a good deal on one. Is it a clean enough signal that it won't screw with the quality of my monitoring chain?

Do yourself a favor and go with the Dangerous Music ST controller. This thing is so freaking Sluuuuu Teee! You just get yourself a custom D-Sub harness wired up, and your good to go.
