Another full over-timer here.

Just your standard 10 - 16 hours a day.

Full time.

I also do the occasional "playing" gig at a bar. Hopefully, that counts. That was my living for years before I found the studio. Now it's all I do, and all I think about. I still dream about it too. I'd say that I've found my soul mate.

Fulltime programmer/composer/engineer since 1988 - Fulltime musician before that for 6 years - had a bad year in 2000 and took 8 months off but that's really the only serious downtime that I've experienced.

The only work I do aside from Front End Audio is recording, but it's not near the hours most weeks that anybody here does I bet.

For the year 2005 who posted in the black or in the red?

Red - bigtime. Cross-country relocation and startup in new city...

Who on their tax reports posted winnings instead of losses?

losses - moving expenses wiped out any winnings this past year...

Who made money instead of broke even?

money was made, but nowhere near breaking even

And of course why did you think this was so?

already covered

Are you investing in real estate, stock market or just saving it for a rainy day?

Invested in real estate, more for personal/family reasons than for financial investments: it just happens to be a wise investment at present (I'm sure the upcoming baby won't hold it against us either)...

Do you reinvest it back in your business or in this market its just a waste and some other forms of financial avenues is a better investment?

very good Q: usually I've re-invested right back into the business, but not for the time being - business will have to increase and prove without a doubt that it's worth throwing more money at it year after year. The past few years it's been worth it - the last couple, less and less...

For the guys who posted in the red or posted losses what's keeping you in it?

There's nothing holding me to it 'cept it's one of the only things I do very well. When the talent is good, and the performances are stellar, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - that's what's going to keep me in this biz...

In response to Thrill's question: Barely in the black for '05, my worst year in the last 16. Too many factors to elaborate on, but the last two years have seen the diminishing of most of my smaller but consistant money streams. The only thing I seem to have left are the larger projects and, as most of us find, they can be spotty leaving big chunks of time open. I'm not overly optimistic about things changing fundamentally in the future. I have one kid away at college and another going next year so $ is a major issue. Owning the studio property is a blessing and possibly a curse as with the incredible inflation of real estate in the last couple of years, financially it is making more sense to sell the property than to keep the studio open. A strange connundrum. If I sell the property I'm out of business but finally have some cash. If I keep the studio I'm cash poor but I keep the means to earn money and continue doing the only thing that I'm skilled at. Since I'm 57 years old starting a new career doesn't seem appealing.

I've been full time for 25 years. Although, in the early years, I was playing in bands also.

I have been lucky to have a lot of loyal clients that have been with me 20 years or so.

I started out doing rock bands. These days I record acoustic jazz and a lot of choral music for several publishing companies.

Six years ago, one of the publishing companies asked me if I would be interested in doing short run CD duplication. I always try to please my clients, so I said yes. CD duplicating now makes up 60% of my income!

Yes, I'm in the black and I'm currently making an extra $2000 a month on my mortgage payment. In three more years I will have 23 acres, a studio and a house fully paid for. I guess that's investing in real estate!

I've been lucky.

Full Time.

Freelancer, non-studio owner.

I'm also in college, and am going for my Masters and probably a PhD, but that doesn't mean I'll stop AE'ing full time when I get my degrees.

Not a full time pro here. Not enough work in Boston, and I don't have enough money to 'tough it out' interning for 1-2 years and paying rent/student loans here. No other creative industry has their tech people scraping for work so badly. At least film has peter jackson hiring 100,000 people or so for every film in some capacity.

3/4 time private cello teacher/freelance cellist.

1/4 time composer. Working hard to be doing more of this.

My studio is for me! No broke musicianship types usin' my gear, even though it's still all rather humble. (Looking to change that one piece at a time )

Wow, it's great to see that so many people are doing it full time, and that there's such a large pool of knowledge to draw from!

I primarily record my own music, and I occasionally produce other artists. Working in my small studio is like painting for me, and I'd like to make it more lucrative in the upcoming years. I've been working at studio part-time for the past 5 months or so and have enjoyed that, though it's a different buzz from writing. I'd like to be making more of my money in music in the upcoming years, with the most interests in writing, then producing, then engineering.

Full Timer here

For the year 2005 who posted in the black or in the red?
Black - Thank GOD!!!

Who on their tax reports posted winnings instead of losses?
Winnings - THANK GOD!!

Who made money instead of broke even?
Made money - although when people ask my wife what I am working on for 15 hours a day - she says - "a divorce."

And of course why did you think this was so?
Diversification and luck luck luck - translated into doing your best for many clients over many years. I mix, master, engineer, score, all audio all the time.

It be interested to see people's prospectus for their future financial 2006 earnings.
I think 2006 will be interesting - not optimistic or pessimistic - it's hard to read

Like for the guys who posted in the black what are you doing with the extra capital?
Hired my first full-time employee and built Studio B

Are you investing in real estate, stock market or just saving it for a rainy day?
Real estate and retirement

Do you reinvest it back in your business or in this market its just a waste and some other forms of financial avenues is a better investment?

RULE OF THUMB - ONLY BUY WHAT THE BUSINESS NEEDS OVER THE NEXT 6 MONTHS TO MAKE MONEY. Looking at things this way helps a lot. I mean - this is a business.

Full time...in the film business (www.stillking.com). Working on the new Bond film (Casino Royale), recent projects include Everything Is Illuminated, Bourne Identity, Triple X, etc. But music is my slutty passion and have just finished my 6th album with my long-time collaborator and good buddy ex-Zappa great Arthur Barrow, all done here in beautiful downtown Venice, CA. So there.

Congrat's...which album?

For me, not even close to full time. Not even part time for that matter, although I will start part time by 2007. I have a few Master's degrees, contract with the FBI and Department of Justice, etc. Being a full time professional wouldn't let me pay the bills the same way...

If I told you, then I'd have to kill you... (J/K)

Seriously though, I honestly can't speak about the project. Right now I'm staffing up a few facilities, and we'll take things from there. That pays the bills, but music is my pasison... thumbsup
