Thread Starter | Best Male Vocal Mic?
The studio where I'm recording vox for my new c.d has a U87 but I want to rent some other mics to a-b it with. 1st off, would you recommend renting a U47 or a Telefunken 251? 2nd, what other mics would you recommend that I rent? My style of music has been compared to stuff like Coldplay, Goo Goo Dolls, 3rd Eye Blind etc...Vocally, the only comment I have about my voice is that it has sounded thin when tracking vocals in the past. THANKS!!!

I would rent both. They're different and you'll probably prefer one over the other. I would round it all out with a Shure SM7. Again different. Cheap too. but equally viable as the other two for male pop/rock vocal.

you may not be able to rent it. but if you come across one, you must try it. Big ER version from Big Mic Sound Inc in TN. $3000. http://www.bigmics.com/nav-page.html its up there with the best of the best. I bought one. thanks rob |

I love singing into dynamic mics. SM7's and RE20's and SM57's are favorites of mine. I like the round, thick tone I get. I use an 1176 or an API 525 on the way in, but I'd like to have an LA-3A. |

There isn't a "best". It all depends on the voice, there is no way around it. I personally own around 50 microphones, most are high end condensers with some dynamics and ribbons mixed in. Sometimes a simple dynamic mic like an SM-7b will work (and sometimes is sounds really bad on certain voices), and sometimes it takes a $5000 ELUX251 for the voice to shine. Sorry there isn't a more simple answer.

I can say from experience that an SM-7b definately does not sound good on all voices... it's very thin and boring sounding on my voice, for example. But hey, if it works for you, that's great cuz it's cheap. I have a thread out now on male vox mics, too... u47s and 251s and the Pearlman (U47 style)... check it out: http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?t=54872 McBalls |

I tried all my vocal mics with a powerfull tenor yesterday. The SM7 was by far the best for him. He could eat it with no distortion, and I got a very ïn your face" vocal thumbsup track. _______________ Insomnio |
