I remember when they first released the pictures of his Real World studio on the cover of mix - there was a collective ghasp from AE's heard around the world. The front page photo still strikes me as one of the top 10 photos of all time for a peice of gear. That image has always stayed with me.

It's funny but when you see the room and the desk under 'normal' conditions, it humanizes it a bit doesen't it?

Cheers and thanks for the post!

I thought Peter Gabriel owned SSL. So why's he supposedly buying a Neve 88R. An analogue console at that(He He He He). Does he know something we don't know yet (Ha Ha Ha)?

A 777 Subject.

P.S.:Of course this is supposed to be a joke(right).

I was lucky enough to have a really nice tour and visit to that gorgeous studio a number of years ago. The best anecdote that I was told by Gabriel’s engineer at that time - David Bottrill (out of many anecdotes) was the story he told me about an event that happened during a session where the drummer was being recorded in the stone iso room - the one with the glass floor over the creek.

The session was going smoothly, and the drummer was laying down his part. Suddenly, in the middle of the take, the drummer let out a loud yell, and there was a clatter of drum sticks, and the sound of the drummer running out of the drum room as fast as humanly possible. Everybody on the control room rushed into the (now vacant) drum room to see what was the matter.

It seems that a duck from the pond had made it’s way into the creek that ran below the stone room, and a dog had cornered the duck, and was about to attack and kill the duck. The drummer was able to dash into the creek under his drum kit, (under the glass floor) and save the duck from a certain death. Everybody cheered.

No joke! Having seen the layout of the creek and pond and surrounding area, I totally can see it happening.

Too funny!

(From Peters web site)

While we were designing this, there was this talk about building the biggest control room in the world.

I don't know whether it is, but when we were designing this it was very rare to have a control room where the musicians were actually to play. Usually, a control room is a little box that the engineers sit in,

but Peter realised that the control room was a creative space and that was where musicians ought to be. So we broke new ground in creating a listening environment as well as a recording environment.

Yeah, maybe even 20 AWS 900's (his studio becomes the new SSL manufacturing/testing/shipping center). He probably test's, & burns in each individual one before it goes out for worldwide distribution with his personal 'autograph' attached. The new 'Peter Gabriel' AWS900 'Signature Edition'.

mixerguy ... nice story ... i love ducks .....

I still have the magazine where real world was introduced to the public ... I was about 25 around that time ... those pictures never leaved me ....

I really started to like Peter Gabriel when I was in Israel on the kibbutz (is was around 20 ).... we used to get drunk after work with a guy from Denmark .... first listen to Gabriel live the double disk ... ( I stlill have the record somewhere .. ) and then after two bottle's "wodka from the holy country" .. or more ( only 1$ for almost 1 liter ... forget about the headache ... we were young in those day's ) the guy from denmark always played frank sinatra ..........

When I came back in holland I bought the record from Peter Gabriel ... directly and also got a fostex260 4track deck ......

Man do I like the sound of a big-band .... once I recorded a big-band playing earth, wind and Fire .... those dynamics .... I got thrilled about the wood and brass ...

Right now I'm hunting for a nice ssl desk .......... so that's why I surfed into the link from duncan site's ( got it bookmarked for sure ... )

well if I offered about 60.000 will they do it ... i'm such a nice guy ...

greetings wim

Nope. I have been to real world a few times. It pretty much kicks ass any way you look at it.
