Pretty sure the power supply and international power regulations would easily make up the cost, I think 500 series will always be a compromise in this area, but also allow many manufacturers to bring products to the market without needing to meet the international power regulations in each each country, where the rack from API and others sees greater economies of scale. also the service issues would be lessened with third party power supplies.

Hi

I concur with the other reply... power supply and associated regulation conformity, extra metalwork and more labour involved.

No brainer, really.

How about just be stoked??

Man, the more I read on gearslutz, the more I wish people would stop bitching and be grateful for totally sick and affordable gear! Who knew this many people would bitch about everything wrong with NEVE finally coming out with a 1073 500 module?! So what if the trim button is the phantom power button? This is not a 1073. So what if there is not an EQ? This is not a 1073.

How about we all agree that this is probably the coolest thing to come out in ages? Can we agree on that and not nitpick all the things that you do not like or "approve"?

Seriously, people. This is too cool to bitch about minute details! fuuck

Are you guys sure it doesn't have a DI... you are right RoundBadge, it is a combo jack for the input.

On all the lunchboxes I build I have a DI but no DI switch... I use a jack that breaks the circuit and "takes over" the input once a quarter inch line is plugged into it. Neve may have used a similar jack.... otherwise no need for a combo jack really.

Anyone try just plugging into this? Does the sales info say a DI is included?

As for phantom power, on my Neve console (1073 modules) phantom was on all the time... never had a problem with one ribbon mic I owned.

When I first saw the announcement of this thing it was just hilarious to me. Neve is very smart about how they market their products. There really is no way to have the original 1073 circuit function in a 500 series package.

There are many things that contribute to the sonic character of a mic pre, but I think most would agree that the most significant contributors would be the type of gain stages used and the transformers. The original transformers wouldn't fit in this package and 500 series racks don't have the 24V necessary for the original single ended Class A gain stages, particularly the 2N3055 based BA283 output stage which is so important to the sound of all the Class A Neve mic pres. Those 2 things alone would make this a fundamentally different device, not to mention all of the capacitors being modern SMD replacements. I would say the only thing about this device that is the same as an original 1073 mic pre is the "1073" in the name.

I am not saying that this mic pre may sound bad. I'm quite sure it probably sounds great.... maybe even better than an original 1073 who knows. I am just commenting on the skillful marketing of a product as a "1073" mic pre that is pretty much technically impossible.

Its named 1073LB, and I think Neve has the right to call it whatever they want, they have made a not very expensive great preamp to be as close to the 1073 as possible and that fits in a lunchbox, we should be thankful!

other examples!

Telefunken are calling the U47 and Elam 251 by there original names, though not as originals inside, they called a new version of the C12 for C12 VR!
UA has their LA2A, 1176ln... once again, NOT as the originals inside... and this list can go on and on... still great mics/units!

So are we expecting Neve to be any different? ...and not use this name, while tons of clones use the number 73? Once again, if any company want to use this number on their product, Its Neve!

While I understand your reasoning here, it's really based on a "two wrongs make a right" philosophy.
In the music biz, I can't tell you how many times I've heard record exec's say, as they're handing you a piece of shite contract, "this is a standard deal". Which translates, "this is the standard way we screw artists, writers and producers."

In the case of the "LB", I'm not suggesting that it's a sub par piece of gear. Just that...

Clever marketing does not change reality.

If the 1073LB is not even close to the original in any aspect, it will strike back on Neve, not so good marketing in the end i think!

My neve 1073lb acts exactly I expect to hear!
It's colorful and thick .
Work perfectly with my U87 vintage, AI and Akg C414.
However if you are looking to get a super clean & transparent sound, stay away from this.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

guitare flamenca / valse ,avec 1073 lb + lavry ad10

hey! JE Poste de France. J'ai un Neve 1073 lb, VOICI UN privilège du Québec Résultat j'obtiens with MA Guitare Flamenca negra.

valse flamboyante prise 4 en 24.96. new lavry. no reverb .mic 40 cm 12eme case.mode xfm..wav

la chaine de matériel est ;

microphone dpa 4011
preampli 1073 lb
Lavry ad10
rme fireface 400

(pas d'effets ajoutés ni équaliseur pour cette valse). juste pour montrer un exemple. la musicalité est excellente je trouve, mais la qualité du préampli ne passe que grâce à la présence du lavry ad10.
