Trident Trimix or wait for Toft "ATB"? HELP!

Hey guys, I'm very much considering picking up a nice Trident Trimix, but it is a touch too small with inputs and especially FX sends and returns (well, no returns, I'd have to route back to 8 buss or inputs). But, great sounding board, right?

(One thing to note, since I do have a Dangerous 2 buss, I could suppliment with that that... would like to hear how you would do that too)

BUT, then we all know there's this new Toft "Trident" with that same 80 EQ and much more modern routing and features. Any chance with the improvments in technology today that this board can sound as good as the old Trimix or Series 70? Could the pres compare?

What would YOU get? This kills me because we don't know what this ATB will sound like, so at this point I'm curious what people's logic and thinking might be to help me make this choice.

CONTEXT: Use PTHD but integrate a ton of outbaord FX, 480L, Eventide, then compressors like C2 Distressors... then also love to have lots of synths in line, etc.

Please help!

The Trimix is going to sound better b/c the pre's are class a transformer as opposed to the ATB's Burr-Brown design. The question is what kind of condition is the old board in? Will it need a recap? Does everything work? You may end up spending $2000 just to get it to tip top shape. Personally, I'd prefer to have a smaller better quality board as opposed to a larger lesser quality board. ...not that the ATB is going to sound bad but the ATC-2 reviews say get outboard pre's if you really want the unit to rock. The ATB will sound just like the ATC-2. Now offset the cost of the board with getting 12 quality outboard pre's. Even if you spend $500/channel it's still $6000 additional to the cost of the board. Just spend like $3000 getting the old board in tiptop shape and you're still much further along in the game.

We had two Trimixes linked in my previous studio (34 channels). I enjoyed the EQs on that baby. A seriously cool console and easy to work on. I was never crazy about not having solos on the channels. Instead you had to work with the mutes.

I have just rewired my Trimix so that now the transformers that were on the mic pre are now balancing the line in. The sound of the desk, crosstalk etc is now so much better. I also made some of the "matrix" faders my fx returns. I also picked up some centre-idented pan pots which have made a world of difference too. I would try and get all the information you can about this particular trimix and the condition it is in before you jump in. I jumped and had to spend quite a few quid getting it to rock. Don't forget patchbay costs etc.

Here is how I would use your D2B with a stock Trimix 16x8x8x2. Plug submaster output pairs 1 + 2, 3 + 4, 5 + 6, and 7 + 8 into D2B input pairs 1 - 8. Then plug the Trimix's master insert send into D2B inputs 9 + 10. Returning the D2B's stereo mix output back into the Trimix's master insert return allows you to sum the submasters with the stereo master without using up the 8 returns. Feeding your PTHD outs into the 16 input channels gives you full subgrouping and EQ, while your effects can be returned to the 8 tape returns.
As for the ATB, it might be cool...
Pick, why didn't your channel solos work?

Because they didn't exist. Only mutes.

Weird. PFL button should have been right above the mute.
