PATCHBAY - looking for a high quality 1/4" patchbay

I'm just looking to get pointed in the direction of a high quality 1/4" patchbay or are all of the 1/4 patch bays just junk

I have the Neutrik NYS-SPP-L1 model that is quite common and some of the jacks just will not pass audio singals through them. Just dead.

Help needed to find something reliable and long lasting.

You should get a longframe TRS patchbay (b-gauge). I had some from Mosses & Mitchell before changing to TT and they were built like a tank.

Are there active electronics in these patchbays like the Samson that have the switches to change from normalled to non-normalled modes?

I have nine of the Neutriks, never had a problem yet and most of them are over six years old. One of them I replaced the modules with insert modules. I clean the contacts once or twice a year with Caig Deoxit.
How many of your modules are dead? I'd be happy to send you a few replacements, for cost of postage. You can PM me.

Re: PATCHBAY - looking for a high quality 1/4" patchbay

Look at the constrction and simplicty of a highend bay by ADC, Switchcraft, Audio Assories, Moss and Mitchal, now look at the cheap TRS to TRS. It's night and day.
Some have had good luck with the cheap made in china bays, others haven't, it's hit and miss and really dependant on how often you make and break a conection !
I say do it right and if you want to do it on the cheap I have 4 or 5 ADC 48 point to punch block bays that I ll sell for $15 ea ! The client thought they were TT and the seller wouldn't take them back so they are just sitting here!

Same experience here. Flakey and a waste of rack space (cheap, but not worth the money you pay for them).

No contest - the Samson is better by far. Better functionality. Better built. Neither is at the level of some of the better TT bays, but the Samson is close.

Neither has active electronics.

Behringer. Cheap and very good quality. Only thing I think they can't really mess up.

I got a couple Bittree bays on eBay for about $50 each about 8 years ago... they've been great. The punchdown and pin-extractor tools are a little pricy, though.

Thanks a lot everybody. That was very helpful. Though the TT patchbay would be really cool, I just have too much invested in balanced 1/4" snakes and patch cables to drop the 1/4" format.

I think I'll try the Samson and see how that goes for the next while.

Cheers!

Yeah - that's the thing that doesn't often get talked about. Pretty much no matter what patch bay brand/type/model you choose, half-decent cables to fully hook it up are going to be worth way more than the bay itself. This is probably true even if you make the cables yourself (connectors and decent wire ain't cheap) and it's also true with cheap/junk cables.

In your case, it's understandable that you would go with 1/4" because you already own the cables. But for the bigger picture IMO it makes sense (including cost-wise) to go TT.

I've had the DBX (horrible), Furmans, and other 1/4" type and the Behrenger has actually been the best of the bunch. Very solid.

Many years ago, I dunno. I just remember the cheap plastic jacks that you could almost break just by looking at them.

Here is my last Behringer in the rack. Had three at one point, when I had a lot more gear. These things are tough, and inexpensive, you can't go wrong.

See it here:

Is this tongue-in-cheek?

You asked about "high quality" 1/4" patchbays. So I sent you a link to one that was FAR superior to the Behringer and Samson models mentioned by others. Get the ADC that ddageek offered or the one I mentioned. But do yourself a favor and avoid crappy patchbays.

This is High End, right? TT or bust. Audio Accessories here, love it. Worth the price. I still have a Behringer PX3000 bay, it worked. It did it's job. It's doing a great job of being a rackspace filler now.
