Neve 33609 A (Metal Knobs) Meters

Hi Guys, could someone help me in finding the meters for a 33609 vintage comp?
I'm not looking for the originals only, the important is that is something that fits correctly in the chassis...

Any Ideas?
Thanks!

Unfortunately they are not going that well. They discount a meter by meter...

Can you just put a different brand of meters? Or do they need to be the original equipped VUs?

It doesen't matter the brand...I just need meters that fits in the chassis and that works fine as the originals...

tha fact is that I don't know the specs that these meters should have...

perhaps you could contact neve and ask them for replacement VUs or at least where to buy them, i think this is the safest way...but also the costliest.

33609 doesnt use typical VU meters, you have to redo the scale to go from 0 to 20 if you go from a typical VU meter. it should be a 1ma DC meter.

check with neve first, it's your best bet!

- cool stuff you have there

You might try some of the bigger post facilities, like Sound One and Skywalker as two examples, to see if they have some spare meters lying around that they can sell you.

Good luck!

Neve 33609 A (Metal Knobs) Meters

Hi

I believe you also posted to my forum where I gave you a link to a source of gain reduction meters that I asked a manufacturer to create as I knew that the Sifam source will soon be no more for this style of meter.

You will need to drill and file the front panel a little but you would have had to have done this to replace the original Ernest Turner type for Sifam D14 type.

Some while ago those custom D14 gain reduction meters were $120 each. The meters I suggest are a lot cheaper but well built.

I am just curious, how in the hell did the meters go tits up? Do these typically die out after so many years or somebody got brutal?

This is the first I have seen a Neve 33609 with damaged Vu meters. I almost bidded on that auction. But missed out doing other things. Good price btw.

Hi

No, but you should not worry where they come from... Ernest Turner has been gone for decades, I believe Sifam will no longer make special meters after October, so what will you do to fix your unit?

You can't fit a VU meter... you must fit a 1mA meter scaled 0 -20.

I have arranged that you can do this...

PS... If they were mine I would either contact AMS-Neve if they had any old stock, or pay a metal shop to make new rack ears. The unit looks naked without them.

Who would take them off?

was only a curiosity...
I've already contcted them after your first reply... they replied that could customize the meters for my needs... so I replied tem U gave me that link, and I was in need of two of them for my 33609a

I told them that has to be an 1mA meter scaled 0 -20... there's something more I should tell them?

when I'll have the meters the unit will be serviced and checked from a technician here...(right now I stll cannot power on the unit since the rear connector it's a strange guy like this...

******//img685.imageshack.us/img685/243/photo2uo.jpg )

then I'll make build the rack ears...

Ps: I got the 33609 from ebay...nobody bidded and I took it for 3600$ shipping included

Geoff, I own one GTC2 and sounds amazing!

Hi

Those are Cannon EP connectors...

You can get them from here...

EP/AP Series Speaker Connectors - Catalog - Whirlwind

I don't know how the power cable and the compressor get separated but I get the impression that your unit had very neglectful prior owners in its history.

The EP is wired pin #1 is Line, pin #2 is neutral, and pins # 3 & 4 are linked and taken to chassis.

Your tech needs to look inside to check that modifications were not made to this connector's wiring.

PS I am puzzled by the absence of the voltage selector which was a slotted wafer switch on these units. The units started with EP4's, went over to XLR LNE's and finally the IEC plastic power connector.

I don't recall single power units... but they may have sneaked through as they were a standard product and I was in the Custom division, Special Orders Department.

PPS I glad to hear you love your GTC2!

my partner bought the 2 33609 from the national TV station. so maybe for broadcast facilities they were delivered as single power units.

no, it was just a bump...
Listen the meters guys replied me this:

Dear Max,

Thank you for providing your info.
Actually, our TN-42AB-S0392 was built according to one of our customer's requirement.
It is not exactly same with sifam's D14.The scales of these 2 meters are not exactly the same.(see attached picture)

******//img443.imageshack.us/img443/1138/cimg3464r.jpg

Besides, the angle of our TN-42 from 0-20 is 72 degree, which is different from D-14's 90 degree.
We use a different magnet movement with sifam, so 72 degree is the best we can do. Please be noted.

I would like to send you 2pcs of TN-42 as samples.
Sample free: TN-42AB-S0392*2pcs (FS 1mA / blue LED)
- If you could let us know the current/volt of each scale 0/4/8/12...etc.I think that will be very helpful for sample making
Freight collect: Do you have collect account? - If no, please provide your delivery address, I can estimate a freight for you.

Any comment you have, please let me know.

Best regards
Eva

Neve 33609 A (Metal Knobs) Meters

Hi

A lot of it I would just ignore... Who cares what the needle arc is in degrees provided it is 1mA full scale deflection and divided equally into 20 portions albeit in 4dB chunks to avoid overcrowding the scale?

The dimensions are such that it would fit a 32264, let alone a 33609.
I believe it also has the option for internal illumination although this requires an external current limiting resistor.

I'd go for it
