"coloured pres" to add to my Studer console

Hi there,

I just changed my desk in my studio and I'm happy to have Studer 904 installed.

I love the pres of the studer but I was thinking of adding some other preamps.
What do you think ?

would it be a good idea and what pres ? Germaniums ?
Any idea?
thanks

the faders on that console are smoooooooooth..!!
(and it sounds great!)
Btw..

I'd buy a Lunchbox and some Avedis MA5's..
(I'd fill it with at least 4 MA5's.. but you could also decide to put whatever pre, eq, comp you want in there..a lot of choices to do step by step when budget allows) I'd buy the BAE 11 slots in your case.. (not a fan of the pwr supply in the 10 space API LB...and the pin1 issue).

and/or depending on your budget or number of channel needed.. an Aurora Audio GTQ2 or the GTP8..

Best regards from south CH!!

+1 for Red 7. You might add the Mercury M72 to your list. Good luck. thumbsupthumbsup

Germaniums, TG-2, Mercury M72 or M76, Vintech x73i are all great preamps with a lot of coloration IME. Great River, APA Juggernaut Twin, or LaChapell 992EG will yield a little less color (but still quite colored) and a lot of tonal variation/versatility in general if that's also needed.

agreed. I would also add the Preq-1 channel strip.
Fantastic on vocal and acoustic recordings.

I'm glad Nathan mentioned the Juggernaut. It is a very intriguing pre, for less than $2k you get 2 channels, switchable transformers, di....a lot of options. I have not heard it, that's why it wasn't one of my suggestions. But for my next set of pres, it would be on my "must try" list. Good luck. thumbsupthumbsup

I don't know if the flow of dough is an issue, but honestly, get a Purple 10 pace rack. The FiveFish offerings are incredible. For API type of vibe, go with the x-12, then x-72 for neve. After that, get a pair of clean tube pres like Manley, then husky/thick tube pre like UA 2-610 or Mercury, then do the smoother side of things of either A Designs P1 or Chandler Germanium or TG's. You won't anything other than that.
