16 ADAT:Digi192 to DA-16x / ADAT vs. AES sound quality?

Hiya all!

I’m considering adding an Apogee DA-16x to a HD ACCEL rig - going out of the 192 interface sixteen channels of ADAT via lightpipe to an Apogee DA-16x to get 16 more channels of D->A.

I don’t need to do the whole interface thing, (I don’t want the X-HD card) - I simply want to get an additional 16 analog outs.

Before I drop the $ I wanted to ask y’all -

1) Any scientific proof that AES is a better sounding data transmission method as compared to lightpipe? Opinions seem to differ here....

2) Would I be able to do 16 channels of 96k with the two boxes? Would I need any extra hardware?

3) any other things to be aware of?

I can get the DA-16X for $2,700 new -

I’d also use the DA-16x for it’s clock. It would be a simple setup - HD3 accel, one 192, and the DA-16x. (and maybe a nice analog summing box soon!)

Thanks, and Happy holidays!!

First of a 192 interface is fixed so it only gives you 16 outs.

If you need another 16 outs you must have the X-HD card that you hook up to a HD process card or Accel card.

Huh? My understanding (I was told by a Digi dealer I trust) is that a stock HD192 I/O box has:

8 channels of analogue i/o on db25 (can expand to 16 analog out for approx $1,000)
8 channels of AES/EBU on DB25 connectors
8 Channels of TDIF i/o on DB25 connectors.
16 channels of ADAT/Optical i/o,
2 channels of spdif i/o,
2 channels of AES/EBU on XLR connectors.

That's where they get you.

Its really only 16 channels going out at one time.

They do this so you have to buy more HD 192's.

Really? Yikes! That is NUTS! dfegad

so if I go Apogee i need to drop the approx $500 extra on the Apogee X-hd card

This blows my mind. What about the 2 ch of AES and 2 ch of spdif on the digi192? Are those locked out? I find this totally nuts. Anyone else? Any other info?

THANKS!

This means that the $1,100 Digi OO2R has more simultaneous I/O possible (18) as compared to a $3,000 Digi 192

this is totally nuts!

No they have the same.

Its really 16 outs with the extra AES/Spdif outputs mirroring outputs 1-2.
