| Gear maniac | Otari MX80 anybody still use them?
I have a friend that has a really nice Otari MX80 in mint condition. I always wanted a professional tape deck. I have Pro Tools... if I purchase the Otari will it help my overall sound, and is it with $1500? Thanks, |

My MX-80 has been gathering dust in my storage room for about seven years now. I miss it terribly. Very sad. If you're recording anything aggressive, and you can justify the tape cost, by all means it will be worth $1,500. Just make sure you use it properly: get and use a playback alignment tape, print tones on every reel of tape you use, and do a record alignment with every single reel change. Then slam the sucka'!

| MR-1B capstan motor - MX-80?
I have a MR-1B Capstan Motor. This thing is (I am guessing) 8 inches high, 6 inches dia. and weighs 10 lbs. I am trying to figure out what it goes to. am guessing one use was, an MX-80, 2" recorder. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Or if I am so far off, let me know what it does go in. It looks just like this one. Did my very first studio recordings on one of these. Working with it years later made me realize how good it was/is. So, yes, nice machine. 1500 can be reasonable if in good health...

2. No, it is worth about $3,000 to $4,500, depending on condition, spare parts, remote, documentation etc.

The MX80 was one of the cheapest Otari's multitracks, like a prosumer MTR90..not the best sounding things imho but for ease of use, one of the best. Will it improve your sound? Who knows. |

If someone is thinking an MX80 sounds better than digital, they have a crummy digital system and or do not know how to drive IMO. | |
