Modular studios of the future?

The concept seems great!

It seems like I could cut the cost down a bit.

But how do they sound?

I figure why invest all this money into a wharehouse and not own
the place, when I could at least own the studio and bring it with me if things
don't work out.

Anyone hear of any sucess stories with these new modular studios?

I think if you look at the price of some of those larger rooms the cost is much greater than building yourself (I'm not talking about wood flooring and stone walls tho).

Most of the materials you use to build a studio can be recylced into your next studio if you need to move.

Personally, I'm happy to pay a contractor to do the installation work for me, but you can save a lot if you have the time/ability to do constrcution yourself.

And while yes, its nice to own the building, in many areas such as NYC thats not possible unless you're a millionaire.

Also, the "purpose built studio" is not always the best solution. I've made some of my best recordings "on location" in either a rehearsal space, or rented out townhouses and churches.

Creating a cool vibe and having all the people feel comfortable is much more important to the success of a recording than having everything sound "pro."

Oftentimes this means no control room, direct artist/producer interaction, which means less control over every sonic detail, which is great, unless you're a control freak.

Put all the musicians in a room together and have them make music.

Novel concept, I know.

The cost of the room systems is no less expensive than traditional construction. In fact, in some cases they are more expensive. The benefit is the modular aspect. A room still has to be acoustically correct in it's proportions, dimensions, etc.

A couple of those systems have additional expenses due to freight and included installation services. You don't just put these up yourself.
