AEA R84 guitar cab micing distance?

How close (or how far) do you normally put the AEA R84 from a guitar cab?
Do you use a windscreen to protect the mic from speaker wind noise? I assume the further away, the less necessary this is!

I use a pop filter on my R84 at all times, if anything it's just habit by now. Typically I'm maybe 8" out on pretty loud cabs with the R84, centered on the cone.

I used one to mic a cheezy old 60's electric organ through a piggyback bassman setup, turned up to "pretty crunchy", in my very live wood & plaster living room, from about 6 feet away, and it's a great sounding track.

8"-12" here - at least on a Fender Deluxe.

I use an r84 on cabs frequently. I always use a pop filter. I put it very slightly off center, pointing toward the center of the speaker, 6 inches back, or closer if the room sounds are not good. The figure 8 pattern will pick up too much room if its too far back. The mic takes spl for days so no worries there.

Mostly, I put on headphones, and ask the player to play to the cue track and move the mic until it sounds good in the mix - but it often ends up in the config described above.
