2-1176 Last Minute Advice

I'm just about to purchase a 2-1176 and wanted to check to see if there's a serial number issue with these as with the 1176LN.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Not to be a dfegad, but have you considered the Purple? I like its added features and IMO it sounds better then the UA.

There's a lot of dfegad on the 2-1176 on this forum, I dont understand why.. To be honest ther's a lot of the opinions on this forum I dont get...
Anyway, I love mine and use it all the time, both in tracking and mixing.
Go for it!

I have a Blue Stripe 1176 Rev B, A Purple Mc-76 and a UA 2-1176. I used to own 2 ref F Black Face 1176's. I also used to use an 1178 everday for a number of years. They all sound and behave a bit different but all have the same general "Flavor". I bought the 2-1176 on a fluke from Ryan Hewitt here on Gearsluz and thought well if it sucks I will just sell it off and move on. I actually love it. It falls right in the middle of the Rev B 1176 and the Purple. The Rev B is SMOOTH. Just fantastic. And the Purple is more like my old Rev F's. A bit mid rangy and ballsy. The 2-1176 is not as forward in the mids and is a bit smoother on the top as the Purple but it is not as mellow and transparent as my Rev B. And it sounds better than the number of 1178's that I have used. It is not as bad of a unit as everyone wants to piss and moan about. It is very workable. The only think that bugs me is the panel layout is so different from the other units that I have to (God Forbid) stop and think about what and where I am tweaking the unit instead of just grabbing the controls like on an old style 1176. Its just what I am used to.

They all have their place and they all have different gain settings and structures and sounds and meter balistics. I just use my ears and quit worrying about all the other crap.

Good luck pulling the trigger,
Michael Greene

There is no better! Just different!

Not to give you more to ponder, but why not check into the Caswell c2s by the the other studio electronics (not the mic people)? That thing is awesome, 2 1176's with Neve line drivers in one rack space.

The Caswell c2 actually looks pretty cool. But I've been dying for an 1176 for as long as I can remember. And to have TWO of them would rock my world. So it looks like it doesn't matter which serial number I get

How about the ALL buttons, do that sounds the same?

Thanks again!

I just received my 2-1176. And from the preliminary listening I've done, I have to say I'm really impressed. I've only used the original black face 1176's a handful of times, but these sound really cool. Cleaner than I remember but I'm very happy.

The sound may not be the issue. Part of what makes the 1176LN cool is some of the "in-between" settings. For instance, pressing the 20:1 and 12:1 buttons in is a certain sound. Likewise, pressing the 8:1 and 4:1 buttons in is another sound. There are quite a few combos you can use. These come in handy on drums and vocals. With the 2-1176 you are limited to the "all buttons" setting and that's it! I would get two mono boxes instead.

Just my 2 pennies.

I got 2 x 2-1176. Just love them.
I allso got 20 U with other comps, like distressor, 160, expressors, la2a.
All comps got their own sound. Someone are good for one thing, others not. We have heard that before, or???
Try to consentrate on the instrument as the sound!! The gear will just "catch" the sound.
