I knew this year it would be Mariah Carey's turn to get spotlighted.

Man it must be nice to be Phil Tan right now(2 records that he mixed are nominated for record of the year).

The only issue will be if one of these wins we will here all of the propoganda that analog is dead and Digital has taken over...blah..blah...blah.

I don't know about that - Diana Krall, Paul McCartney, Nigel Godrich, Eno, Flood, Jon Brion, Nelle Hooper, Herbie Hancock, Seal, Lanois, Clapton, Carly Simon, Coldplay, the Stones, etc., etc., etc.

I'm about as jaded as one could be and still work in L.A., you must have some damn fine carpenter ants . . . . ...

I licked a Grammy

My claim to fame is that I licked a Grammy.

The singer in my band was going out with the brother of a recipiant (so I basically a recipiant too right? ;p ). I was over at his house for a party.

I saw the Grammy from across the house and in a drunken stupor I licked it.
It tastes so yummy.

Seriously though, being able to do what you LOVE, work with, (some of the time), incredible talent and get the ultimate recognition for it? Make a great record and be acknowledged by your peers - the voting members of NARAS? This is the academy awards of music, people! Does anyone else here take this seriously, or care for that matter? How many voting members of NARAS do we have with us here at gearslutz? . BTW, I'm glad you at least got to lick one pumadrum...pause

Well it is as good as the music industry gets, though comparing it to the academy awards is like comparing a summa cum laude to the valedictorian of summer school.

Of course, i'd like to believe that i'd keep the same opinion if i won one, but then again don't hold me to that.

Agreed on the value of Grammy recognition. The nominations are only a reflection of the best of any given year. Obviously some years are better than others, but as they say the show must go on. Voting member here since 98'. I feel there are some very talented nominees on this years roster. Notably, Gwen Stefani. Can anyone deny this girl has talent? Gorillaz came with an innovative record that sounds awesome. Lot's of good stuff on there yep.

Voting member here. "Blvd of Broken Dreams", nominated for Record of the Year was mixed at my old studio, Image Recording. The album (American Idiot) was two Grammy's last year, and the single, American Idiot, won the TEC Award a few weeks back for Best Single Production. We love awards.

Oh, and my feeling about all of the awards is this:

They really don't matter too much, UNTIL YOU WIN ONE and then, when you're standing on stage giving a speech in front of a lot of your peers, as I was lucky enough to have done upon winning our first TEC Award for Dave Matthews Band "The Space Between", you feel darn PROUD. Really good stuff...and you get to tell your parents, and it's all GOOD. For me, it's something to be proud of.

Here's a little pic display...click on "Start Slideshow" and if it doesn't change automatically for you, just click the forward buttons.

******//homepage.mac.com/johnvannest/PhotoAlbum3.html

I didn't get to accept the award this year for American Idiot...I went home before the TEC Awards dinner because my daughter was visiting home from college that weekend. If I ever go up again, I'm going to take my camera so I can get a shot FROM the stage!

For the sake of arguement: can anyone deny that song "Hollerback Girl" is one of the most tuneless, insubstantive, juvenile excuses for a "song" ever to grace the top 10?
