The building and contents of Cello Studios [6000 Sunset, Hollywood, CA] are for sale

Dear Recording Industry Mavens, Movers and Shakers:

The building and contents of Cello Studios [6000 Sunset, Hollywood, CA] are set for sale on Wednesday, January 11, 2006. Please pass this note to EVERYONE you think would be interested in purchasing it--preferably to once again run as a legendary recording studio.

SUMMARY: The building and contents of Cello Studios (Formerly Western Recording, formerly the home of UREI, formerly the eastern half of Ocean Way, etc.) are for sale. My company, Location Connect, in collaboration with Wes Dooley and AEA (The Ribbon Microphone People), have compiled an exhaustive inventory of the building's contents, available at ******//www.nonmundane.org/~cello/. The building's most important rooms, including most notably Studios 1, 2 and 3 are intact and still have the original sound treatment. Studios 1 and 2 are ready to record in today, though Studio 3 (home of many Beach Boys albums, and many other legendary recordings) needs a new mixer. Studios 4, 5 and 7 are also OK (but lack mixers, too). Other areas of the building will need some work. Inspections of the building can be arranged; see the link.

MASTER TAPES AND OTHER MEDIA: We have compiled a list of all the master tapes, disks, etc., we found at Cello. If you have reason to believe you left anything behind, contact Dean Rallis at SulmeyerKupetz, (213) 626-2311.

The sale itself will be conducted on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 (again, see ******//www.nonmundane.org/~cello/ for details). If you, or anyone you know, is interested in taking over this building, its history and contents, IT IS TIME to act.

Yours sincerely,
Alex Pournelle,
Director, PC and LAN Practice, Tech/Knowledge (www.t-k.com)

I just hope someone buys the entire facility and re-opens it as a studio like it was.

That would make my decade.

Looking through that inventory, I can see literally hundreds of items that I personally bought and transported in my old van. How sad. Couldn't I have the chance to buy the Sony C-55p's just for my contribution?! When you get to know a place inside and out it's very painful to see this happen.

Lot 3301: An auxiliary mic input panel that was named "Al Jr.". It was named for long-time OWR/Cello staff engineer Alan Sanderson. You'd often hear "Run the 67s and C12s into Al Jr." That building has lots and lots of lore.

I hope somebody buys it and keeps it going. If they do, they'll find all the little hidden treasures in the nooks and shadowy places.

Anybody else know the sign behind Studio 1's amp room..."Uh, what are you doing back here, bud?"

I got lottery tickets for tonights drawing for $12,000,000 and one for tomorrows $21,000,000. Good luck to me. If I win, it will stay open I hardly ever play, so we'll see. I had a friend that won $49,000,000 a couple years ago.

It's a lot of work to piece everything out. From the past few auction's I've seen they would get a lot more money piecing it out.

Wonder if we will get a chance to see the auction results? I'd love to know what some of those winning bids are...

Did anyone else notice the auction text attached to the Fairchild compressor saying that it was found in the ATTIC?? Now THAT's a shame.

Well, I'm really sorry to see the place close, but it makes me wonder about the quality of business judgment of those in charge to have $30k assets sitting unused in the attic.

Well, judging from the condition reports of those 2 Fairchilds, they didn't work, hence the attic. What strikes me is the trashed condition of all the equipment. I have never seen a more beatup piano and at least half of the gear has problems. Very sad.

i can't believe they are really selling the coffee pot and 2-slice toaster.

one dollar, one dollar, one dollar, to the man in blue, two dollar, two dollar, two dollar.......going once, going twice... SOLD to the man in the backwards hat for five dollars. next up, the 2-slice toaster...

man times must have been tuff.

it is sad to see this happening. i wish i could buy it.

This unfortunate sale demonstarates a few things:

People arent using huge studios as they used to (duh)

Having all the gear in the world doesnt mean you will ever recoup the costs

Clients need to pay up and stop asking for favors and engineers need to tell them to shove all this 'i'm gonna be huge' spec crap.
