AKG XLII or Brauner AE

Has anyone ever compared the AKG C414 XLII to the Brauner AE mic. I have the Manley voxbox with the U87. I am now getting a Neve portico, but I was looking for a good vocal mic for all styles-male or female. Something that would sound completely different compared to the U87?

If you want something for all styles, I wouldn't get the XLII, which is kinda brite. The silver one, XLS I think is the model name, is more neutral and much nicer souding as far as I'm concerned

I would go for Brauner. It will sound really fine with your Vox box and will certainly make bigger difference to your U87 than any 414 IMHO. It's very bright and airy. I own Velvet, but worked on Phantom C too. Great for vocals.

The phantom is quite versatile. I don't know the newer 414 models, but compared to the older ones, it is much more suitable for different vocal applications IMO.

Both are great mics IMHO.

C414 is more of an "all rounder", Phantom C (or AE) more suited for vocals and ambiance. But indeed two very good mics!

Cheers

I have the AKG C414 BXLII and had the older 414 and I will tell you that they are night and day.

Great on Trumpets, Trombones, Percussions, and especially on Vocals.

Clean, Clear, and not bright and edgy like the older version.
