Just did some research on the Nail...Wow, what immediately attracted me to the Nail was the 'Mix' feature. Have you compared using this feature with parallel compressing? Like setting the Mix knob on 50%, then compare those tracks to a mix of the true uncompressed signal with the Nail signal's Mix knob all the way up? Was there anything different using these two techniques? I'm now very interested in the nail. Thanks for the recommendation! After all, I do love my Pacifica and REDDI!

So I guess we add the A Designs Nail into the mix, comparing it to a pair of Trakkers and the Dramastic, all for the stereo bus.

Thanks,

Rich

The "mix" feature is on a lot of things and while often a convenience, it is certainly not the featured selling point of a unit... the textures the unit can provide vs. your sense of aesthetic vs. budget should be the main criteria for this decision.

You might want to throw in an API 2500, and a Thermionic Culture "Phoenix" to the discussion as well... they too are great units... then again, my personal favorite is the InnerTUBE Audio "Dual Atomic Squeezebox" which run about $7500- but you can hear every dime of that $7500 coming out the back!!

...or you could do the smart thing and find a reseller that can get you "all of the above" and shoot them out in your studio on your time... or PM me as I have an Obsidian that I'd part with [I just moved to Germany, but have yet to ship "my stuff"... so if you're interested, lemme know as my stuff is going to ship sometime in the next week or so].

Peace.

I have a pair that are almost always strapped across the 2-bus when mixing. I use them on all kinds of things when tracking, but for 2-bus work they are irreplaceable in my studio. The Hard VCA settings are magical with the right attack and release times, esp. with a gentle knee. Rock stuff really seems to come alive with that in the chain.

I usually follow the trakkers with a Manley stereo Pultec. I know those don't get much respect around here, but in my sheltered little world, my mixes have sounded better since I began relying on the Trakker/Pultec mix chain.

Good luck!

I have a Dramastic Obsidian 500 and it is GREAT on the mix buss - like an SSL buss comp, but better.

Anyone compare the obsidian to trakkers on a mix buss?

damn it, why is it so hard to make a choice. How much is a used Obsidian 500 worth?
I contacted Regular JOhn asking what he has...Either Im stuck on the obsidian or it just keeps coming up over and over in my research. I asked the guy at GC who is knowledgeable about this stuff and he mentioned it even tho they dont sell it. Also said he can sell me a Manley MU for a good price...Arggghhh.

Im trying to make my fatso work on the 2buss. Like what it does to the midrange and bottom end, with the flexibility to shave of the highs a bit. But I also don't like what it does to the bottom end if thats the first frequency to hit the compressor.

Been having an issue trying to properly side chain this thing with a High Pass filter. I have sidechained compressors before and don't remember it being such a pain!

It would be much easier if Dave would just make the Fatso SR
