building my own studio

the wheels are in motion!!! after years of freelancing and working out of others studio i'm finally going to build my own (Magic Mirror Studios). it's a priviate studio for me and my wife. from time to time we will rent the studio out to others so we do want the gear list to be impressive as well. here's what i've decide on thus far. the pieces with "***" next to them are the ones that i haven't used but want to test. and if they work out then i'll keep them.

micpres:

ams neve 1073 dpa (2)
api 3124+ (own)
dw fearn vt-2
gml 8304
great river mp-2nv (own)
manley dual mono mic pre (own)
pendulum mdp-1***
(i want one more 2 chan pre just haven't decided yet.)

compressor/limiters:
ams neve 33609/jd
dw fearn vt-7 ***
empirical labs distressors el-8sx
innerTUBE atomic squeeze box (mono) ***
purple audio mc-77
thermionic culture phoenix ***
tube tech cl-1b (own)

eq:
manley massive passive eq
(have a $10k alloted included manley. can set aside more if need be.)

fx:
eventide h8000
tc electronic m6000 w/ icon remote
uad project pack (will sell)
tc elctronics powercore element (will sell)

convertors/sound cards
lynx aurora 16 (2) (own 1)
lynx aes16 (4) (own 3)

monitors:
grace design m906 (own)
pmc ib-1s (5.1) (right now i have the blue sky system one 5.1)

i haven't decided on the eqs yet. i also haven't gotten around to mic selection.

I use nuendo 3.2 on a dual amd opteron computer which i will up grade to dual/dual core amd opterons.

no microphones?
15 mic pre amps and 1 stereo eq?
no dedicated delays?

all this sounds like more of a pipe dream than anything practical... reminds me of making a "wish list" by looking thru the Sears catalog

what are you talking about? first of all i said that the list isn't done. i have an idea of the mics that i want but need to make sure that they fit in my budget. as far as eqs. i don't tend to use them that much, besides i used the urs everything bundle when mixing. maybe you should read more thoroughly and ask questions before making judgenmental statements.

people try to sound so intelligent by knocking other people down. i have 20 years in this busniess. and you have no idea of whom you are talking to.

if you can't be constructive here please don't post.

You should adjust your chair height to catch the last few sentances. Never know what your gonna miss

Good luck with the studio. Show us pics when you get started. I always love checking out the construction end....

That's an enviable list for sure. Where do you come up with the dough? I wonder that about a lot of folks around here. It's not like more than a handful of studios are bringning in the kind of Business that can off-set the top flight gear aquisition. Did you inherit, life savings, lottery, loan, credit card? I'm just a poor kid looking at a narly bank loan for 20K like it's an insane amount and that wouldn't lock down half your list. Obviously you've been at this for a bit. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your mic selections. You have good taste, good luck.

There are a lot of people who don't use outboard delays and EQs. I wouldn't say that the lack of those in a studio is fatal.

this is so true. i actually learn the skill of eqing with mic plancement. m ic selection and pre amp selections. by the time that i finish tracking i don't need to much eqing for a mix. so plugs help here. besides, i don't mix most of my stuff. i usually have some one else mix. as fare as dedicated delays go, there are tons of great plug for delays. psp lexicon clone for one (which i own). besides, with the eventide and the tc elctronics (i also plan to pick up 1 or 2 spx2000s) this is more than enough to handle all of our fx needs.

i just hate when people do realize and respect that people have different work routine and styles. why would you criticize someone when you don't know there skill sets or even heard their work? that's just crazy!

i tried the crane song stuff in their early days. sound good but wasn't balled over by their sound. so i tend to shy away from their products. maybe i need to give them another listen.

Millennia NSEQ-2. Great EQ and won't break the bank.

Dave is a great designer, but the Ibis, while not bad, didn't inspire gear lust when I tried it. A little odd ergonomically too.

i've been thinking about picking up the gml 8200 and the great river mq-2nv along with the massive pasive. also, in the mic pre category i'm considering picking up either 2 chandler limited ltd-1 or tg channels mkII or one of each. either way that gives me 2 additional eqs.
