Buss comps that work well on tracks?

Maybe instead of the High end this page should be called
the 2 buss!?
All this talk of 2 buss comps has got me thinking about one that will work for tracking singular instruments AND then 2 buss.
Does such an animal exist? I'm wondering how the API 2500, the smart c2, Cranesong stc-8, or the tubetech multiband (sc2-b?)
would fill the bill? Almost forgot the Pendulum 6386 and ES-8.
I'm using protools and have to work quickly so I would be using these on the way in mostly, and if I have time also tweaking the 2buss. I'm leaning toward the api or the cranesong but, whadya think? thanks
daniel

What are you looking to track? And why do you feel you need compression on those tracks?

Do you have a good collection of mics and pres? This affects more of the sound going in than any compressor would.

For me compression is a more useful tool in mixdown.

agree with thrill 100 percent. sound during tracking is made at the source, the mic, the mic pre, and then the AD (is you go digital that is) ... those 4 are THE essential steps during tracking. as for use of compression during tracking ... of course it has a relative importance depending on how heavy you want to compress during tracking.

The tubetech multiband for example can work very nice during tracking. I've been using it recently on vocals in an eq kinda way on backing vocals and that came out very well.

I've been really happy with my STC-8 purchase. It is wonderful on bass, vocals. On the 2 buss it is outstanding. Between that and the HEDD my 2 buss is rocking...now just need a massive :)

Hey we're all in agreement! I record and mix lots of demos where I track and mix 2-4 songs in 10 hours with less than stellar musicians
I've gotten into the habit of working, starting with the sound in the room, then mic placement, basically getting the sound I want during tracking as most times I get 2-3 hours to mix and burn the master. I'm happy with my pres, mics and rooms and would like a few different comps to try. I have an api 525,an 1176, tubetech cl1-b,and the comp in 737,which is well, you know.
I have way more more than what I need for what I charge, this is for my band and the few bands I get a year that care
I haven't ever had enough comps to try one on the mix buss so I'd like one to experiment with for the mix buss that also will work on bass, kick, snare, guitar, vox.
I realize that no one comp may do all of this well but I was thinking that the tubetech multiband might be cool to have on bass and kick but not optimal for mix, that the stc-8 might be best on mix but how is it on single instruments?
Hey I know many of you gearsluts have used all of the good stuff so, I'm all ears
thanks

I think the stc-8 is amazing on bass, vocals too. Certainly there is a lot out there to choose from (you already have a 1176 for thick and chunky). All around you'd love it and you couldn't go wrong.

You could always get a couple of distressors with stereo option (and you MUST get the brit mod, it slamz). I haven't used them on the 2 buss but in the David Derr threadz some folks did and liked the results. Those would be way versitile too for things like drum buss, tracking/mixing (bouncing thru them) etc etc. I use the shit out of mine...

In my limited experience with the Distressors on the 2 buss, they seem to work very well for some things but not well for others. It may be hard to predict what they will work on, as it depends on the music content big time, and you'd have to try it out first to know. The stereo link mod makes a big difference for 2 buss work, and the Brit mod is also a must have. I love my Distressors!

I've been using a vintech 1272+tubetech cl1-b
or vipre+1176 for bass, vocals and guitar.
The posts on the other 2 buss pages seem to favor the STC-8 over the distressor for 2 buss duties but haven't seen as much on the stc-8 being used for track as the distressor.
Obviously both are great
Can't get the tubetech multiband out of my head either
thanks

FWIW, I've never been able to get a Distressor to work for me on the 2-mix. It has too much of a sound to it and it kind of shits on the whole thing rather then sitting on it.
