YESSIR! YOu are supposed to FLEA. The reason is that you get 95% of the sound of an olden Neumann U47 for reasonable money and with a 10 year warranty.

Besides--Ivan and the FLEA team are sincere experts who really treat the customer right. They are very good people and they provide an excellent customer experience. Wonderful sound, beautiful metalworking, top top assembled product.

As for the others who are not satisfied with a different beautiful mic. One can only imagine the fashion industry cum mic sound in Hell-A.

I'm just wondering...what makes these clones cost $6000? Are we paying mostly for expertise and labor? I just wonder what the breakdown on the cost is...honest question...

I suppose the real question is which Flea 47? Clearly this thread has made it clear that we go with an EF12, as Flea recommend, but do we go with the F7, F47 or Thiersch M7?

Are there folk out there with each or any of these variations and how do they work out in a Flea, not in terms of an old U47?

Cheers.

We buy the FLEA 47 with the F7 capsule and the EF12 tube. The F7 capsule is drilled / machined / finished by FLEA and skinned / checked / quality controlled by Thiersch. It is already handled by Herr Thiersch.

As far as capsules are concerned, FLEA partners with THE experts in each version of capsule. Thiersch for F7, M7 type and with Tim Campbell for C12 type.

Doesn't it give comfort that FLEA are wise enough to turn over capsule quality control / final assembly to specialists?

After the rescent epic derail on this thread, that's still the question... Had my first session w the Flea 249 today. On this singer (female) it was the winner over U67, Lucas CS-1 and CMV563. All sounded great of course but all three of us (producer, artist and me) preferred it on this particular project. A tad 10k boost (1081) and a touch of comp (Retro STA) did it!

There is a brand new FLEA demo cd available from FLEA dealers. The new cd features a good variety of music recorded with either the FLEA 47 or the FLEA 49. Some really nice work is portrayed and some GS recordists are featured on the cd.

FLEA included two of my tracks on the cd to show off the FLEA 49. One is a piano recording of the Scarlatti Sonata in F Minor done with two FLEA 49. The piano sound and performance is mindblowed with a fantastic up and coming pianist who placed very highly in the 2010 Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Then also a portion of the Pergolesi "Stabat Mater" performed by the Lyric Consort with the soprano and mezzo-soprano captured with two FLEA 49.

Ask for it from FLEA or from your FLEA dealer. It is a very worthwhile listen and a very convincing case for getting on board with FLEA.

I tried, the stock Flea with F7/M7, and the K47 capsule, I compared to the Wunder, and my current Tracy Korby 47.
My findings were that I did not care for the K47, it was too bright for my tastes.
I sent back the Wunder, and kept the Flea with the F7/M7.

The Flea was VERY close to the Korby rebuild, but the low mids are a bit tighter, which I dug.

Also, the dealer Aaron Housholder could not have been more accommodating with evaluation and the sale.

best,
Sean

What is it with you, buddy? What are you sarcastic? Sofa King, I had recording sessions with most of modern clones: Wagner, Wunder, Telefunken USA, Flea and some others during last 5 years.
I didn't compared Flea 47 and Wunder CM7 at the same time, that's true. But, I have used both mics. My friend has got Wunder CM7 with M7 capsule and EF14 tube, so I can rent it at any time. I also made some recording sessions with Flea 47, two years ago ( recordings of female vocal and flute). Flea 47 is much closer to U47 than Wunder. IMO.

Wow, I haven't even heard anyone mention that since 1992! Do people still put body kits on Fieros? Talk about a flashback!

Never listen to opinions regarding gear. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear.

So I must have missed the part where you said you have a Korby modded 47, my mistake.

Why don't we talk about FLEA and leave out the OT stuff. Start your own thread for Grosser and other misc clones.

Here we are talking about FLEA.

I always thought the GT made your voice sound more crossover, a tone that could go from The Eagles to Country. The Flea might be a real good fit for your voice too, their capsule design imparts a smoothness and gets rid of the zingy, edge you hear in other mics. Also it has a well balanced bottom end that is full and masculine without getting too wooly.
