Thread Starter | Making an out-of-phase XLR cable Greetings. I have certain preamps which have no phase switch, and there are times wherein I need to flip the phase. My apologies in advance if this is a bonehead question, but couldn't I make an out-of-phase XLR cable by reversing pins 2 and 3? In other words: in-phase XLR: pin: 1->1 2->2 3->3 out of phase XLR: 1->1 2->3 3->2 Correct? Or am I shrooming? Thanks in advance, -kk |

| you're absolutely right. a dedicated phase switch doesn't do anything else but reversing 2 and 3. |

| Lives for gear | You could put it in a turnaround or barrel connector. |

| I generally keep a few of these on hand, just get a male and female XLR connector and about 6 inches of wire, and be sure to clearly label it as a polarity reversed cable... someone will use it in the wrong application one day ![]() While you are at it, you can also make a couple these with pin one lifted, in case you ever need to isolate an audio ground... but then I do a bunch of live stuff as well, where this comes in handy pretty much daily.
