| M-S with ribbons - a question? I'm no M-S expert, that's for sure, but i've noticed a couple of recent posts recommending the use of Royers (121's and 122's) as the "S" component of an M-S array. Obviously the Royer is figure-of-eight, but I'm wondering if the fact that the two sides of the Royer have a noticeably different sound would somehow be a detriment to a good M-S result? Wouldn't the ideal be to have a figure-of-eight that (other than the reversed polarity) would have a more similar timbre on both sides of the mic? |

| IMHO no goer. You need a mic with same response both sides in order for the image to be right. Coles 4038's work, as possibly do others. Personally if its the ribbon sound you want, I would possibly use a condensor figure of eight mic side mic with a Royer (or whatever your fav ribbon is) as a front mic. | beyer m160 (hyper card) and m130 (fig 8) work great for ribbon ms set. other choice is the ms set from schoeps, great for classical propses and come with ms mic mount. got good results with untraditionel ms set-up when i used c12 as m (cardioid) and c414 for fig 8, worked great for this pop string ensamble. hope it helps guy |
