Portico API GtQ2 and some other quick questions!

This may sound silly but does the portico 5012, GQt2 or Chandler Ltd-1, TG-1 have the traditional 1073 or Neve coloring? Or is the AMS-NEVER 1073 the best bet for that specific thing IYO?

which in your opinion is the better API model 512 or the 3124?

The Chandler Ltd 1 is the way to go for 1073 stye sound as it's inteded to soudn that way and has the EQ.

If you really want my opinion between the API 512 and 3124, I'd go for the Chandler TG-2 or TG-Channel. The APIs sound good, but the Chandler stuff sounds better on all the sources I used to like APIs on. It also doesn't have the problem I've requiring a crappy sounding pad when the source gets moderately loud. I don't mean to be a smart ass, but that's what prefer sonically when recording sources that and API would be good for.

Then why not check out the JM 130 Pre, NO pad needed, so it has far more input headroom, operates at +-24V giving it more output headroom, can be ordered with either and API type output trans for a nice warm sound or with a low distortion trans for a clean sound. As far as the 512c/3124 pre they are exacly the same...
