Drum room question

Will smaller rooms result in moore overhead bleeding into the snare and tom mics?
If so, ever used hyper cardroid mics to avoid this?

The bleed occurs from the initial cymbal hits so the size of the room shouldn't affect the mic bleed. If its a small dead room that should help with isolation. On the snare I use a 414 with the hypercardiod pattern and it works pretty well as far as isolation is concerned.

I wouldn’t worry about the bleed, the advantages of having the drums in the booth are huge! plus, some drum rooms can add a great sound.
Are you building a drum room ?

No, i'm not building a room, kinda stuck with what I have but i'm happy with it...

It's just that I was tracking drums with 57/E604 the other day and when I started compressing stuff, the overheads just took over...I know compressing brings out the bleed in the mics but it was quite nasty, so I ended up gate-editing the toms all by hand to avoid bleed....

It turned out great, just wondering if a bigger room or HC mics would make it better...

That'll pretty much happen in any room though. What I do is comp the FOK mic and blend it in with the rest of the kit "to get that sound" and then use softer drum bus comp so that the cymbals don't get nasty.

I love using gates on drums! kick for sure with compression, snare and toms sometimes. what ive found is it really depends on the drummer. They have to be consistent to gate anything but the kick.
And I almost always print the gated signal.
Sometimes I will use automation in the mix for the toms. I love to record a great drummer!
And for the overs, I have got great results with some "budget" mics. maybe its just placement, luck? but most of the time I dont have a problem with the drums over riding the cymbals.

Large relective rooms can cause very bad cymbal bleed as well.

Best thing is get the drummer to not hit the cymbals so hard...

But very often that is the domain of a very experienced drummer.. and not most of the 'kids these days'...

Overheads and Compressors are like Oil and Water, the two just don't mix well, IMO.

it's good to go easy, and do it before tape.

wait, do people record drums without tape?

lately, i've become quite the fan of underheads. front of kick, left front of kit across the snare, right rear of kit across the floor tom. my ass in the throne on some 1971 ludwigs and a speed king.

YOOJ, joey. yooj.

Hhave the drummer recordin a bit ot the part with and without cymbals and let him listen. That should help him understand how he can influce the drums sound.

If that doesn't work, crany the cymbals in his headphone mix so that it hurs if he plays them too hard.

I’ve had great results in my old small room 12'x 10' the ceiling was 9' tall and constructed with a 4 ft. deep trap above . some times with a big kit we could barely fit mics stands around it was so cramped but it had a great sound ... maybe because of the huge trap in the ceiling
