what is your reference music when mixing for a particular genre of music?

Just curious to know what peoples reference music are when doing their mixing for a particular genre of music.

I understand there are some great music out there, mixed well. I get people in hip hop, that always use Dres music as a reference when mixing for hip hop tracks to get the bass and brightness right. But I also get other styles or genre of music to which I really have no clue on how a good final mix should actual sound like and I may be using the wrong material to reference from. Like Jazz music, Folk or Pop, etc.Can you please name the title, artist and track or the album for the genre or style of music.

Can you please name the title, artist and track or the album for the genre or style of music.

The Real Thing - Lisa Stansfield (Mixed by Peter Mokran & Ian Devaney)

Hellagood - No Doubt (Mixed by Mark Stent)

D.E.V.I.L. - 666 (Mixed by Thomas Detert & Mike Griesheimer)

Get Down On It (re-master) - Kool and the Gang (Mixed by ?)

And then some Max Martin/Rami stuff.

I have around 30 reference tracks, both ones I think are perfect, and some extremes within what is still acceptable (heavy low end on Miss California for example). I also have some old Toto stuff to remind me what actually sounds good on radio: stuff that isn't squeezed to death in the mastering process. And some Michael Jackson stuff from Invincible, absolutely f*cking horribly squashed sound.

i've gotten into the habit of 'de-mastering' my refs when using them to gauge a mix. basically, low and hi shelves at 80hz and 12k pulling ~2 db off the edges.

imo it makes for a more realistic representation of what the mixer was likely hearing. it certainly makes for a much more attainable freq curve ime, as mastered stuff is generally sweetened on the ends.

I've been carrying around the same three reference tunes for almost a decade, and they've served me very well for sussing out a monitor system or referencing a track I'm working on even if they're not the same musical genre, simply due to familiarity:

"King Katchei's Infernal Dance" from Igor Stravinsky's _Firebird_, performed by Robert Shaw & the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on Telarc.

"People" from King Crimson's _Thrak_

"So What" from Miles Davis' _Kind Of Blue_

If I'm doing a funk or R&B project I'll also bring Earth Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits CD, and recently for some heavy crunch guitar projects I put together a reference compilation that featured tracks by Soundgarden, Bad Brains, Don Caballero, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, & Steve Vai.

But mostly it's just those first three cuts.

Are you people for real?!? How could nobody have mentioned? There is only one reference recording no musician, producer or engineer will ever disagree with being THE BENCHMARK of audiophonic excellence and that is, of course, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON...Pink Floyd (Yes, still on the top 100 world chart). For Rap though, it does not get much more to the point than Public Enemy. Cheers, See yall on the dark side.
