Just giving this thought a bump.

Also pretty curious about the Api 5500 and Equalux and how they differ.
Very tempted by both... can't afford both.

FWIW, application would be for stuff in the same ballpark as something like Broken bells or Bonnie prince billie.
I have an Arsenal eq-r24 that I like a lot, but considering a step up in the eq clarity-sweetness land. It would be used with Api 2500 on the mix buss as well as tracking.

As well pretty intrigued by Clariphonic as well these days, though more control over lows may lead me to one of the others as a 1st step. Still, seems like a solid product for top end sweetness.

Then maybe shoot for a Burl B2...Damn ITB is getting sweeter every day!

Well whichever you choose you will love it. The R24 is good for the price. I was in a similar boat a while back and bought api 550b's. I was going to test the equalux but I just couldn't give back the 550b's. There is once in a blue moon I wish I had the extra gain control of the 5500 but very rarely. Since then I bought a D&R Stylyx console for $1000. That is what I should have purchased at the time. The api eq is awesome. The D&R eq is awesome in a different way and I have 8 stereo and 12 mono eqs for the price of one 550b. If you can swing a cool console in the $2500-$3000 mark and keep the r24 for when you need a different flavor eq you will be so much further ahead. Of course this IMO.

Cheers

I have both the API 5500 and also a pair of Equalux units here (since March), and I can say you won't go far wrong with either.

I've typically used the 5500 for tracking and channel feed duties to clean up fizzy guitars or tweak flabby kit mic feeds, whereas so far, the Equaluxes have been doing mostly group bus duties in more of a lifting and sweetening role - but they are capable of much more than that and I am liking them a lot.

That's an interesting option. I'll check out the D&R.
I'm summing via Dangerous D box for now but a console is on the wish list.

I'm betting it would be hard to make a wrong decision here.

I've got two. Great of anything. They are cleanish but the can really make highs sparkle and have deep, deep lows. They just seem to reach into the extremes really well. My only complaint is that recall is a little tough but as was communicated to me by Paul Wolff anything under 6 Db is not terribly crucial and over that a test tone should be used. In practice recall has been fine with them after I got over my OCD and feeling like I needed a micrometer.

+1!!
I'm actually using the EQ5P (500 series).. It's rather clean as paul999 said, very nice EQ.. Sounds sweet overall, I'm using it on vocal duties to carve out boxiness, nasality, shrillness etc.. Also on drums is very nice!!
GS sometimes is weird, not much talk about these very nice products! The TX5C compressor is also killer on drums.

one sweet EQ

I recently got an Equalux as my main HW EQ. mostly for the mix buss with an api 2500 and for tracking. I don't have tons of experience with great EQ's, but enough experience with great ITB EQs and good outboard EQs to be leary of EQ sonic toll, esp. on buss. had i known what good this unit would do, i would have gotten one long ago and before the 2500 (which i also think is great). the panel isn't the easiest to read, but i really like the features-- the shelves and freq ranges leave little to want. its been a joy for sweet sounding sculpting without collateral damage. kicks my software EQs' butts. amazing what a little in tracking can do and has been my best ever option to roll off bass.

I'd really like to try some of the Tonelux stuff. Paul Wolff ttok time to help me with some stuff, and I would really like to support his business. Great guy, and I'm sure these are amazing products. I just wish I could try them.

Are these similar to API eqs? I really like 550s and 560s. That's kinda what I'm looking for.

See, people keep saying this is awesome on 2buss, but I just seem leary for some reason, and I don't even know why. I'm really a Pultec/Bax eq guy on 2buss, and everything else scares me. But I couldn't tell you why.

I have 4 too. They are superb. To my ear, they're kinda a mix of a API and GML... if you can cross the two. It's clear, but a nice vibe, and good n' ballsy, and TONS of headroom.

The Equalux is just the EQ in a single rack. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you like API I would go with API. Tonelux does not do what API does. I love my API eqs mostly for the color of them. The tonelux eqs are more "hi fi". For example I really like the dirt of API for rock snares but when doing a jazz project I like the open and sweet highs of the tonelux eq. On the other hand if I only had tonelux eqs you wouldn't find me complaining. It is beautiful on 2 buss BTW.

Jrod, Tonelux makes huge sounding high quality EQs. Its not a Pultec though in tone or function. Considering its on sale for $1000 off the regular price you can't lose.

Dang guys, you are saving me any pesos here! I haven't found a dedicated guitar buss eq yet. I'm wanting another 560 and another 550A for kick, snare, and bass useage, but I'm still missing some guitar magic. I have tried the Phoenix on Kick and bass yet though, it could be at home...

The fact that you guys are saying its a cross between API and GML makes me want to try it.

Quick question - is the Equalux like the APIs with stepped gain/cut and fixed frequencies? Looks like it but I couldn't find it on the website, thanks.

They are not stepped. They are continuous.

They haven't indicated this is the case. The special runs through the end of the year.

I've not been paying attention. At what point did they stop being 'exclusive to VK'?
