the secret is the pad. the new 87 ai is a lot hotter and distorts internally. use the pad and it is a great mic.

Interesting! Listening to this test, I much prefer the U87i. Much better midrange presence (=fuller sounding). The AI has more high end detail, but the older one sounds more like music to my ears.
