Electrodyne 511 clips?

Hi everybody

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these. It's not possible to demo one where I'm situated. The 511 would accompany API + Avedis preamps + an E27 eq + UBK Fatso and Purple Action comps.

I'm looking for something simple to use/hard to mess up with instant great sound and mojo. The 511 seems like a pretty obvious choice here.

I surely would like to hear some clips if anyone has made any. Any other opinions & insights are welcome too so fire away!

Thanks in advance,
Heikki

I'll tell you what, send me a vocal or something you want EQ'ed and I will run it through the 511's and send the file back to you.

Mojo is what Electrodyne does best. I can't speak for the new 500 edyne stuff cause I've never tried it but from what Larry and others are saying on here it's pretty much the same as the old modules. I have a couple different old one's and just love them!!!

What a great service! thumbsup Tony

I'd just say this:
GO GET THE 511!

I think you'll be happy...

Bests,

Cheu

P.S.: You already own some of the best gear around, you definitely deserve something that could par all this equipment and the new electrodyne EQ is absolutely lovely!

I have a similar gear array to you.

I love the 511's simplicity and... baseline musicality. You know how you're sometimes thinking "This sound needs a little more life... a little brighter would do it," but you don't want to give too much thought to it? This is what the 511 is perfect for.

Simple, musically satisfying, confidence-boosting EQ. I am on a sabbatical right now from full-time studio work while I develop my own music (scoring of theater, and NPR and a new BP album), so I can't be spending a lot of money. But if I had the dough, you can bet I'd buy more 511's!

You cannot regret the purchase. That's my statement on the matter.

I'm demoing a pair right now. They sound awesome, but I'm not sure they sound $1000 apiece good, considering their relatively limited functionality. I've been mixing a lot with them the past couple weeks, but have my first tracking session on them this weekend; that'll be the deciding factor for me.

One cool thing about the 511's is that there's a definitive "better or not" when you use it. There's no +.3db @ 4124hz. It's not that kind of party! It's more like, more mids... DONE. more bass.. DONE. less mids... DONE...etc. The curves are really wide, so if you've got half and ear, you can dial in an improvement to your sound... if it's needed.

See if you can convince Tony to hit the 511 then into the BAC500. Super-sexy combo!

The curves are wide at the lower gain positions going to a steeper "haystack" at the extreme positions. That's what keeps them musical. The Q narrows the more you gain "up or down" hence less phase shift and keeps the frequency "on target". Many of the older EQ's that have no way to adjust Q work this way... it's what makes them "musical".

If you guys like these two band EQ's so much you should really try the 9 band 712L graphics!!!

They'll never be remade again as when both Jon Erickson and I looked into bringing these back to market some 6 years ago now, Digitran who makes the switching knobs (and still does to this day) wanted 1,800.00 each for the set of switches... that was for a quantity of 1000 units!!!! Apparently they only sell these switches for Governmental (mental being the key word) use now. So well never see remakes with original switches... at least I don't think we will.

It took me over 5 years to find 14 of the 712L modules... so I'd say they are pretty rare as well.

Now back to the two bands... they're more powerful than most men can handle... use with extreme caution as they may cause an excess amount of undue joy when in use!

I've got two in my mastering rig as well... people can't believe what they can do for the two buss as well! I stuck them in there for "fun" and they've been in there "working" ever since!!!

a couple lines from a un eddited review i am trying to get finiseh up.

i recently stated that the 501 ( as well as the 511 ), for me, brings the thought of rich creamy chocolate covered caramel ( and oh man i love creamy chocolate covered caramel )! this pre is just thick enough, it is rich, and detailed!

the 511 EQ is a awesome tracking EQ for my work flow, simple, fats to set up, and easy to dial in. i could also see this on a two buss for some gentile MOJO type of tone shaping. it allows for some really righteous tone shaping, it is rich and again very smooth.

I'm still willing to run audio clips through the 511 for anyone who would like to hear the unit. Or you can contact Vintage King or Pete's Place Audio and we can arrange a demo unit to your place.

Just wanted to add my unbridled enthusiasm for the 511's. I bought a pair of them last year to use on music projects. But I've recently added them into my standard voiceover recording chain (the bulk of my work), and have been amazed at how much goodness one click can create. Even my voice sounds decent with one of these babies in-line!
