Smart Studios is Closing

Smart Studios is closing. This sucks. It's the best studio we have in the Midwest.

That Stinks

That's no fun.

I wouldn't say it's the best studio in the midwest. But best in Wisconsin for sure. Bummer...

A producer as famous as Butch Vig with his amazing discography can't get enough business to keep his doors open. Does this make anyone else feel like their career is on a sinking ship?

Le sigh.

While Butch still owns it, with Steve Marker, he doesn't work there anymore as he lives in LA.

BTW - about a year ago I created a "Smart Studios Appreciation Society" group on Facebook. Feel free to join and leave a comment if you are on FB.

I doubt that's the case. Butch seems to be working elsewhere. Sometimes the ship gets too bloated, time to sell everything off, regroup, and move forward. . .

I live only a few blocks away. I did a record there years ago. Such a luxury to record there. Awesome staff. Sad thing.

Mike is the epitome of midwestern hospitality and hard work... and he's a great engineer. Hope he finds a good new home.

Ah, fair enough. I certainly hope that's what happened.
Still a shame about Smart. From all accounts, a really cool place...

Is it the studio that is for sale as a business or just the building?

Location, location, location. Eudora is a poor location. Not exactly the mecca of music. If it was in KC, it might be appealing.

"We kind of came to this decision a couple days ago" for financial reasons, engineer Beau Sorenson told The A.V. Club this afternoon.

And according to another article, same reason: money going out was greater than money coming in.
