Couldn't help not chiming on this one older thread. But why not.
I have a locker of mics and they all sound like crap through mid and low end converters with many micpre's and bad gain staging.

I have both the Classic and one of the last Classic II made. I love the Classic II. It sounds rich and silky through a Millennia M-2b and SPL Premium> UA 1176 >LA2A > AD Lavry or Prism. And not too hot either.

But so do a lot of other mics I have

Cheap chain, wrong gear and bad gain staging are the cause a lot of misinformation around here.

I have an original Classic, and although I don't use it as much anymore, I still can't bring myself to sell it because I don't have any other mic that sounds remotely like it.

It is bright. It is "hard" sounding. But sometimes it works.. ever tried one as a room mic on a kit? It gives a nice present top without having to boost the highs on the other mics, and I can crush it to death and not loose that.

Mine seems to have the presence lift at around 10-12kHz., so it's high enough not to be too offensive in the sibilance range, but it's not my favorite vocal mic. On the rare occasion it works for a vocal, I usually put it in the GT Vipre, so I can use the slow rise time setting, which helps tame the nasty stuff.
