Looking for Headphone Amp reccomendations.

I am looking for some advise on Headphone Amp systems. I want to be able to distribute 6 to 8 headphone monitor mixes for the musicians/talent - any reccomendations that people can give me out there would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Panning.

That's why I'm building my own around 4 of these.

I'm building an 8 XLR input to 4 Dsub outputs box.

The cabling and box will cost about $300 plus $400 for the mixers.

So it's a bit cheaper (not much) but it has pans.

Paul Lico at AVR, L&M (Bloor/Burlington/Waterloo) & SBT (Rick) are the Toronto area Hear Technologies dealers and should be able to get you a demo of the Hearback system. As well, feel free to contact me for further info.

I have been checking it out the Hearback system all day and it looks outstanding. I just got a quote from my main US retailer. For the hub + 4 mixers and all the cables for under $900 USD. I will check with my L&M contact to see if they can come close on price. Our dollar is doing so well right now that I think it may be hard to beat.

Produceher - I use a series of small mixers as part of my solution right now, I just find that a lot of players will sometimes look at a simple mixer like yours and scratch their head . The last thing I want is my players asking me - 'what does the purple button do' - I have had enough of that already.

The beauty of the Hearback system mixers is the simplicity of those little mixers, it is virtually idiot proof (ooops, I forogt who I was tracking, I take it back). I also like the limiter section on the mixer, I find that with a mixer based solution you really have to learn to manage the faders and the gain to avoid really bad clipping situations. This is not a problem for me but I am not the only one using the system.

I haven't heard the Hearb back system yet but in terms of functionality I would spend the extra dough ($150) and get something that will avoid some of the pitfalls that I experienced with my mini mixer setup - I know the system is simple to you but you would be amazed at peoples lack of knowledge on basic mixer principles. Thanks for sharing your potential solution, I just wanted to point out some potential problems you may face, because I know that I have.

Thanks for your help everyone

If you're taking a look at the HEAR you should also look at Aviom. I tried both and ended up with the Aviom. More inputs was the main reason, I wanted the possiblity for more submixes for large tracking sessions. It's come in very handy.

Funny, I was checking out the Aviom stuff after an email I just rec'd from a friend of mine - they seem to be the clear market leader and their system(s) offer a lot more flexibility. I will have to do a little more research tommorow. When you say large tracking sessions - how large do you mean?

Thanks.

You raise a good point. Perhaps I'm thinking in terms of what "I'd" want. And not what they need.

As a Guitar player in a 2 guitar band, I would think that seperating the guitars with panning would help.

I could always send it back if it doesn't work.

Thanks.

That is pretty much my plan - I am going to have send this link to Hear Tech and see about a commission cheque.

Your doing exactly what I'm planning on doing Kenny. Some info/pics/plans etc on your XLR - 4 Dsub splitter would be great...

We are running a cheap Alto 6 channel distribution amp at the moment, that takes inputs from PT and then sends those out to Behringer MA400 miniamps/level controls. I build the seperate cues (up to 4 because one of the Alto's channels has died and I used the last one to send a click track) but I'd really like to give my artists better, more convenient cue mixes.
