finally fired up my Studer

alrighty,

so i finally got round to firing up my Studer B62 and printed some mixes to it.

she was lovingly restored for me to better-than-factory-spec by Andreas Kuhn in Switzerland and i must say, he did a top notch job.

i don't have an analog console, mixing in PT HD with various outboard, etc. and will really only be using the Studer as a "processor", bouncing out to it and back in for the sound. it's great to be able to use it like this, as an insert in PT, as i can adjust the level i send to tape in steps of 0.1dB.

well, the sound is really nice. creamy, deep, smooth, punchy and, if i want it, all the way to meaty n mashed. loving what it does to the low end. using it in a mastering chain is interesting and bloody good fun.

i'll spend some more time with her today, experimenting with levels, pre and post eq, etc.

aint she a beauty?!

i'm feeding her minty fresh ATR Master Tape.

Mr. Kuhn even calibrated her to my choice of tape as part of the service.

Cool. Never heard of that one until now. Seems a brief google says it's kind of like even hotter 499. Slick. Take it you dig? Just having my B67 receiving service love and being set for 468.....can't wait to try that, as I haven't before either. Tape is a joyous animal! Just hearing the bugger spin round makes me feel like I'm in the right place

Looks beautiful. Congrats! Love those Studer machines. I recently bought a Revox PR99 that is just now receiving some TLC from the Revox Service Center. Looking forward to my new 'saturation plug-in'

That is a very beautiful machine, there

I have a similar one, and love it to bits

Easy to overdo it in the beginning, though..."Huh, why does everything in the mix go splatsch? Oh, yeah...oops"

i do indeed dig!

this is my first foray into tape and i chose ATR because it is in production and the very highest spec and quality. straight in at the top!

are you having your B67 serviced in the UK or abroad?

i have a Revox B77 that is next to be shown some love. thinking of loading it with a tape loop and using it as a proper delay-ay-ay-ay...

Pardon me if I'm preaching to the choir, but if you haven't already, you might try tracking the occasional part to it every now and then. Yes, it's a pain to realign the tracks once you bring them back into your DAW, but there's a difference -- weirdly -- between sounds that are tracked to tape as opposed to sounds that are tracked to a DAW and then bounced out to tape. Acoustic guitar or drums are often good test subjects.

The difference in method is often pronounced -- though my mind can't seem to really address why.

Congrats on the cool new/old box!

Cheers.

slightly off topic i know, but does anyone have any experience with a revox g36? what's a fair price to pay? i've had one offered to me.
it seems audiophiles really like them, whatever that means.
thanks, jeremy

Would be cool to test that. You'd probably have to record the performance to tape and DAW at the same time.

True. I wasn't being scientifically rigorous when I developed that "conclusion." Just casual experience.

Cheers.

Actually it's a fallacy that there is a noticeable difference between recording to tape and then transferring to DAW versus recording to the DAW and bouncing to tape. I did a series of controlled level matched tests and the general consensus was that it didn't make an appreciable difference in the end. My initial assumption was that it would. But I proved myself wrong. The entire thread is good if you have the time:

As far transferring tape tracks into the DAW and lining things up...it's easy. Check out the videos in my signature. I've come up with a real-time process that automatically does it all for you. All you need to do is press rewind on your tape deck every once in a while.

I own 2 of em. Between 100-200€ is a regular price for functional g36. If the heads are almost new and its been recently recapped then it might go up to 3-400€.
