| Gear Head | syncing logic pro with a tape machine using 88.2
Hello, I have a studer and an apogee symphony system, I use a unitor to sync them, that works fine at 44.1 but it doesn't work when I use 88.2. I s anyone syncing with logic and use 88.2 at the same time, I have tried several midi/smpte interfaces, so far they didn't work. Thanks for any help or answers, vincent |

Logic wont sync to 88.2 becasue SPMTE wasnt designed to handle it, I believe. I tried so many ways to do it with Logic but wont go above 48.

Well, obviously smpte wasnt designed with digital audio in mind, but I mean it just cant keep sample rate stable as the SMPTE tone doesn't seem to have high enough resolution.

thanks, what version of logic did you use? and which interface? my unitor that I use for syncing at 44.1 doesnt even work when i use logic only without syncing at 88.2. as soon as I put it on it starts distorting the audio.. |

The best way to do that is to get the tape machine to chase Logic. To do that you need something like a pair of Timeline Lynx's (can pick them up 2nd hand for about £200ea) that can control your Studer. Assuming you have a machine that can accept external control? Feed the Master Lynx SMPTE from the Unitor while the one controlling the machine matches the Timecode from the tape to the Master box. It's very cool controlling your deck from a keyboard. That way you can record at whatever sample rate you want. It's also a slightly more solid way of doing it. |

Thanks, I found a solution also keeping the tape master ( for me that works nicely caue I operate it from the SSL) I found a rosendahl nanosync that reeds smpte and supports 88.2 also it sends out wordclock so when it receive's smpte in will adjust the clocking for the converters so the tape and DAW should be pretty tight that way. The nanosync is conntected through usb to your daw, so this way the tape machine smpte reader and masterclock are connected. I will hook it up this week and also will try it the other way around with lynx devices. thanks for the advice, vincent |
