| Gear addict | Pacifica or Portico?
Thought I'd bring this to the High End side. . . I don't know if this has been discussed here yet, but which would you choose for acoustic guitar and male vocal recording? (Maybe bass DI - a plus for the Pacifica). I already have a Langevin DVC and want something different. Unfortunately, both is not an option. |

These two seem to be getting a lot of "buzz" around here and in other groups. Just wondering if the hype is warranted since I don't have the time to try out everthing new.

autocrat....if your feeling a tad adventurous...and want to learn a bit about the guts of mic pre's... for something a bit different... i suggest you check out prodigy-pro.com/forum and the comments some folks (eg...vikki and others) are making (highly positive) about products from jlmaudio.com for mic pre's. even if you dont go this route (which will require you get some electronics training )...theres a ton of electronics expertise thats impressed me highly on the prodigy forum when it comes to mic pre's...eg...guys there building consoles/mics etc etc. very interesting stuff....even if you dont go this route.peace. |

My thoughts on all this is that this forum is the perfect place to ask questions about new and exciting gear. Like most people, I don't have access to lots of gear and obtaining opinions and perspectives here is a great way to gain knowledge (and for free I might add). Of course it doesn't replace trying things out first hand and I know there are hundreds of options to choose from. I just happened to be interested in the Portico and Pacifica. Haven't you noticed that we're all intrigued when someone gives really detailed reviews (opinions) of stuff they love or hate because we all benefit from it. Anyway, my 2 cents. |

As far as the 'hype of the week' factor goes, looking back to older threads I've noticed that quite a bit the gear that got a lot of hype back then still gets a lot of attention even now... I'm thinking gear like the Cranesong HEDD, Distressors, the Chandler TG stuff and so on. So certain pieces of gear do have staying power and for good reason- I still get exited about all of the above and it definitely hangs with and sometimes surpasses the tried and true gear. IMHO the Pacifica definetely belongs in that category, and though I haven't heard the Portico it probably might as well. Personally I like getting exited about a new piece of gear that gives me a great sound that I haven't gotten with the equipment that I've had for years and I don't mind posting about it. But yeah, Peter's absolutely right, you definetely need to be able to try the stuff out whenever possible. |

Based on my experience with original Quad eight stuff, which I really like. and the Portico, which was an ok pre,but in the end,i passed on[to me,didn't have the mojo of the older 10 series pre's] Keep your eyes on the new Shadow Hills line as well..a few guys I trust are reporting very favorably on the stuff. one of his pre designs is based on one of my all time favorite custom consoles from Sunset Sound in LA...looking foward to hearing the suckers in the near future. | |
