Dynamic range by instrument chart to fight loudness war.

Hi everybody!

I'm more and more into mixing, and found the plug-in "tt Dynamic Range meter" that helped me a lot understanding what I do with my comp, reducing or increasing the dynamic range.
On their website you can see a chart to fight against the loudness war:

Our Aim | DYNAMIC RANGE | pleasurize music!

(look at the bottom to see the chart)

I was asking myself if we could build such a chart but for single instrument and by kind of music, to get a comprehensive way to make a "good mix" with enough dynamic range to be prepared for a good mastering, fighting loudness war for better music!

So, let's do it! We will need the help of everyone!
To the great mixers here, can you test this plug on your tracks and share the dynamic range by instrument?

ok....just signed up....I think what you are suggesting....is a bad idea though.....there should be no standards or scale to judge individual instruments....that is like painting by numbers....good for the student.....but a hindering policy for the master.....I will never follow a chart for my methodology....but I do like the level meter idea....I am gonna check it out now....we'll see if it beats the dorrough's

Thank you!

The idea is not to have an exact single dynamic range by instrument, but a range that should help to know if you're near the red line or not.

Maybe it could help too when you are recording to avoid over-compressing mistakes but want the sound of your hardware comp before mixing ITB.

And you're right, I think it would be a good thing for student (like me) to understand compression.
Like there are charts you can find for eq'ing, and when you've learned it, you don't need it anymore, you just use your feeling with the knowledge you got and begin to be a real engineer, trying something cause you feel the song need it.

So ok, let's see it not as a policy!

But more as knowledge for beginners or engineers that have to work in an other kind of music that they use to do.

Well not individual instruments maybe but the whole pleasurize music concept sounds very good to me, including the logos.

I'm so sick and tired of having to be louder, not better or more creative, original, groovier... call it as you want...it just baffles me how craftsmen/women who are supposed to love what they do, instead of striving for excellence, they just let themselves get pushed because of some unlikely "marketing reasons".

Sorry for my drift
