Anyone come across resonating music stand problem?

I have those black bulky well built music stand to place sheet music or lyrics on and it has always bugged me how it would resonate and interfere with the high frequencies when recording.

Anyone had the same problem and found a solution. Im trying to find out whether those metal skeleton frame ones would be better and does not have these types of resonating problems associated with it.

Anyone can compare?

The pole and the legs still resonate. Not as bad, but you can still hear it.

Yes, my stands drove me nuts reflecting sound. I added a thin layer of outdoor carpet to all of mine. What's funny is without the carpet padding the stands are natural reverbs. And finally, if they are not being used, I completely remove them from the studio.

I simply used the same clips I use for the music to hold a piece of black velvet draped over the top of the stand. If you are hearing a ton of stand resonance still with some fabric on the stands face (for reflection and sympathetic vibration) then you might have some gain structuring to do, or use a different mic, or move the stand... There are always a million solutions to this sort of ting. Cast the wrong light on a studio technique, and everything we deal with would be called a "problem."

I had several music store guys look at me like I was

So I'm feeling much better knowing I'm not the only one.....I have a towel stuffed on mine (in back) and all I found was some Chinese wood stands that won't cut it either......I was told that K&M used to make a wood stand and they are prized by studios but I haven't seen one or had a chance to snap one up.

You should just mic it up and use it as an effect....

Can you explain this? If the mic is picking up the resonance, why would changing gain structure help?

Gaffer tape hi end is there some boutique hifi gaffer tape I don't know about?

Here in Canada, there's a show (?) that is supposed to be funny called the Red Green show where the guy basically puts gaffer tape on stuff and there's canned laughter in the background....usually if someone likes that show, my sense of humour has little or no positive effect dfegad nuff said

Just make one out of wood (you will notice the design I mean if you look closely at many popular music videos shot in the studio). If you just gotta spend money to feel your stand is pro (), then here ya go:

If you have the time, replace the main parts of your stand with wood. I replaced mine with 9mm MDF board for the plate and replaced the top metal tube piping with a wooden pole of the same diameter. The measurements for the pole are fairly standard sizes like 25mm. I grabbed some towel rack holders and modified it to make the lip for the plate that holds the paper. Go to your local hardware or cabinet making suppliers and they should have the parts for you. Its pretty simple to do if you have the time and willing to put in the work. It's made a dramatic improvement on the stand in cutting out the resonation.

If you are cranking the crap out of the pre, then attenuating with something before hitting tape or disk: you will get more stuff in the mic that is not the singer.

Chilling out on the front end and staging the gain properly can change the overall "focus" of the mic pretty drastically. Gain structure is one of the most common variables that make for a good or bad recording, just like phase relationships. The same 57 (more or less) that recorded "back in black" is sitting in everyones studio right now.... We are the variable, so if you are twisting knobs: listen to how your gain structure on the way in for a vocal makes the room open up, or the mic feel dim, or the surrounding "air" suck into the mic, or not. The stan resonance would not be heard by a cardioid mic, NOT completely cranked up, with the stand even just 7 inches BEHIND the mic and to the side. If you are still geting that kind of stuff in the mic: check your gain structure. I have watched too many people let the source dictate the pre level 100%. Of course it is a HUGE factor, but you have to make decisions that afct the tone of the track as well, and use a mic pre and mic that suits the operational volum of the thing being recorded....

Don't buy the thin metal fold up stands unless you want to hear the sound of music falling on the floor while recording. The musicians will also hate you for not having real stands.
