I received my SHG on Wednesday. It took a while to get here, but you have to expect delays with a new product. Mike at Vintage King was right on top of things. I immediately started recording a solo piano session with it. I put up my Royer 122's, which I use occasionally, and used the Nickel transformers. I was blown away with how hugh it sounded. Too much for me at that time! I switched it to the transformerless setting and was happier. The next day I switched to my usual mic's, AudioTechnica 4051's, yeah that's right! The nickel setting and those mic's are amazing. The rest of the day, I listened and just said "Wow". Incredible depth. I switched to the steel setting, it wasn't what I was looking for on my piano and I never tried the transformerless setting! Tomorrow I will be recording a jazz quartet, drums, bass and two guitars. I'll use it for the whole band. BD, SN, stereo OH, acoustic bass, GTR, GTR and one left over! I'll let you know what I think. |

This is all GAMA. No EQ, no compression, 7 mics, no mix.

Sounds f'n great. I love the way the ride cuts through. Not sure about the guitar sound on the right...but I'm sure with some mixing it could be incredible. Thanks for the sample..that's way cool! Gotta get one of these.

Very tasty guitar playing! And the drumming. All of it is cool really. Has that dark Steve Kahn vibe. I wish I had something nice and mellow to mix like that. I'm working on jazz stuff, but it's got a loud drummer and horns. Then compound that with a tuba instead of bass. A mellow sounding tuba at that. Not the easiest thing to mix. The dynamic range is so much that it just can't be mixed at *commercial cd* levels. Which may be a good thing anyway. Are you sick of having your stereo volume control stuck on 1? This GAMA 8 sounds great. I want at least one. |

Thanks for all your kind words. You know it's the players and the room, not the gear, but the gear helps! The SHG does sound great. The transformer option is quite cool. I must admit I don't hear a big difference when I solo the tracks, but in the mix it's substantial. Of course we all know that's what matters. I'm betting it won't be long before there's a price increase. |

On Vintage King's website, they now have a Gama that fits the API 500 series format for $675. They also have a St. Ives output transformer option for the Gama8 at $125 per channel. You can't get it on the API version though. Still pretty cool. thumbsup Another option for the API formfactor. |
