Re-ribbon?

O.K., this craigslist item made me think of it...what's involved in re-ribboning (is that a word?) a mic? I know the Royers are field-replaceable, right?

Late 40's RCA mike (somebody burned out the ribbon with phantom power).

Wow. Just looked at wesdooley.com

So they can fix it cheaper than I though (under $200). Considering that, jeez, I hate asking this, but:

1) How much is the mike worth? I saw it (I bought two old Sennheiser 421's and an SM 91 from him yesterday...score!). It's absolutely gorgeous, but I'm in the market for a large-diaphragm condenser. However, I have more G.A.S. than a family of four the day after a Taco Bell run...

2) Would it be better/worse than the AEA mikes, for instance?

ok i keep dropping this link whenever there is a vintage ribbon brought up.....http://www.coutant.org
i have to say that a grand for a vintage 77-dx seems just a touch high....but maybe not...

as far as the mic goes tho' they sound really interesting.....you sing into it...you sound like the InkSpots or something.....very nice....

multipattern via a metal disk that rotates to cover the back side of the ribbon in various increments....3 position bass roll off...
you need a quiet hi output pre tho'
as these mics are LOW output....even with a new ribbon...
i tried a RCA 77D with a recapped pm1000 strip....sounded great
lots of fun!
check the link....look for the 77-dx....you gonna poop your pants....

The acoustic construction & movable shutter construction are a TRIP!

Doesn't using phase interference to dictate patterns & rolloffs interfere with the mic transparency?

Yeah, but that's part of the magic tone of the 44 & 77. I saw a 77DX recently sell for $1500 but that was a great example and through a respected dealer...it seems like the value of old ribbons is all over the place, buyer beware.

O.K., so was it cosmetically great, or was there something else involved?

That mic looked great to me, and if it's re-ribboned, is there really a whole lot else to it that's likely to deteriorate that badly?

here's a guess....and it might just be naysayers.....
but there's that transformer thing.....
hell i don't know....i need these microphones for food....

....those ribbions are sensitive.....like me...

sooo the transformers is fine & if it's not you find a replacement....something suitable(sp?)
and if the ribbons blown you have it re-ribbioned
and then you have a REALLY fresh mic....

tell him you'll give him a free case of king sized snickers bars (r) + $850...
the snickers are worth $4 a piece in china.....something like that

i have a 77d that needs re-ribbioning....with a pm1000 pre it sounded like smooooth sailing....like you could sing alll day.....listen to doo wop

and it was fukked up....distortion....

it still sounded more interesting than a r0de nt-1

here's a restoration site that i cant vouch for

http://www.k-bay106.com/repairs.htm

these pictures are more for pr0n and to let you know that's it's possible

So Fresh, So Clean

it's the 40's...maybe 50's.....loooong time ago.....those microphones have ghosts
could come in handy...
