New York City Studios??

Hey everybody.

I'm wondering what are everybody's experience with studios in NYC. Of course there are a tons of studios from project to high end. Whether its your studio, a studio you're working for, or a studio you have worked at and have had a good experience, please share. I'm looking to maybe spending a summer in NYC and work my ass off at getting an internship (bash if you must).

a couple I have been looking at:
-atlantic sound studios
-the cutting room
-legacy recording studios
-electric lady studios
-avatar studios

Unless something changed in the last 20 years and I missed the memo, Atlantic is quite closed.

The rest are all fine studios where you'll learn a lot.

If you can get into Sear Sound you'll learn the most... but if you're only planning on being there for "the summer" chances are slim to none that they'd hire you and your career prospects wouldn't be worth shit if you bullshitted them [saying you were looking for a "full time" gig and then screwing at the end of the summer].

for all i know, indian summer is probably not a PC term, these days, anyhow...

I wouldn't limit yourself to just the big studios. You'll want to find a place that will allow you to get some experience and not just getting coffee. There are some great small studio's here with great producers that will let you get in on the action a little more.

I would also say it's unlikely to just get a summer internship. It also makes it much harder if you're not living in the city yet. Nobody wants to waste their time if you're not here and prepared to go.

I agree with what some others said here. The best thing I took away from my summer internship at a NYC studio was not to do any more summer internships. Unless you know someone there who is really willing to show you the ropes, you probably won't get to do anything cool the whole time. It takes a long term committment for those guys to trust you around their expensive gear. I don't wanna dismiss the idea for you completely, those are all awesome places i'd love to hang out in. For me, it would have been better getting a paid job, and buying some more gear, and just spending the rest of the time just recording and mixing. You could also use that money you earn to go hire a real great engineer to run a session for you or mix a track of yours. People seem to have more patients with your questions when you're paying them money!!

hope that helps

Might try this joint in Brooklyn.

NYC studio generally look for people that live in the city and are available pretty much 24/7.

Thanks for all the replies. I am planning for next summer. I'm currently at Electrical Audio in Chicago and its been working out pretty well so far (of course they are all outstanding people at electrical).

I will be living in the city next summer, and I plan on spending some time at Acme Recording up in mamaroneck, ny where I have a professor who works there.

It would be great to have another gig in the city, whether at a big large scale manhattan studio or a more modest studio where I can be more in the front lines.

Fletcher, thanks for the recommendation of Sear Sound, looks really good.

More are appreciated.

a few more....

Clinton Recording
Soundtrack
Brooklyn Recording

Plus scores of small to medium-size studios....just start Googling. Don't overlook the many rooms outside of Manhattan.

If you want to consider options beyond strictly music recording, there are many audio post houses that take interns. Maybe not considered as cool as music production, but you'd learn a lot of new stuff.
