Brauner Valvet X , Brauner Valvet or Manley Cardoid Ref??

How much better is the Brauner Valvet than the Valvet X or Man Car Ref? I need it for modern Teen pop and R&B. Please Advise.

"Better", "Best", "Best'est" are end user relative terms. The Subjective differences between these microphones will be all up to any end users preference to say which is best.

With that said, they are in the same "realm" of possibility. The Manley RefC is a wonderful microphone at its price range, and offers some very cool "air" and clarity @ the top, [a lightness of HF and atmospheric dimension and depth] The RefC has a very "authoritative" bottom octave, [as all Manley Amplifiers offer] and I think its a great microphone for your applications.

The Valvet, is one of my favorite tube mikes for intimate vocals, acoustic instruments and anything with strings. Its intensely musical with its fullness, body and light, balanced tone. I would certainly describe it similar to the RefC, but perhaps there is slightly more boldness and balance to the mid range. That microphone seems to sound exactly like a good u67 when "hugged".

+1
Just rent them and listen to them for yourself.
I've never tried the Valvet but I use the Vma and the Ref C on a regular basis and the
Manley will definitely give you that "airy" top end you're looking for.
Btw a couple of months ago the tube in the Ref C I use in the Studio I work for
got bad and we replaced it with a nos RFT 12AX7 and it sounds great...

Thanks for the feedback. Just so I'm clear. Are you saying that the Valvet won't give me that "airy" modern sound? Also, How does the Valvet X compare to the other two ?

I own both a Valvet and a Manley Reference Gold and have used the Reference Cardioid and they are all just different flavors of awesome. You probably wouldn't go wrong with any of them.

I'm in the exact same position. I'm about to buy one of the two mics.

I love the Valvet but never heard the Ref C. Ive heard the Gold tho and loved it. Its a tough choice. Would be great if there were shootout clips out there.

I need to know if anyone has the Valvet X and how it compares to the Valvet. Someone I spoke to said that the Valvet X has a warmer sound and is still airy, has a nice top end and that it may be a better buy. Any insight on this?

Don't know the Valvet but I had the oppurtunity to compare the Valvet X against the VM1 "pure cardioid" at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt. The VM1 has noticeably more "air" than the Valvet X (not that the Valvet X sounds dark...). Both mics sounds excellent imho. The Valvet X is much less than the VM1 (too expensive for me) so I bought one (got a good price :-).

To my ears the Valvet X sounds very natural, clear and rich - "open" but not hyped in the top end. The transient response is very good too so it's great for stringed instruments (e.g. guitars, mandolin) as well. Love this mic :-)

Hope that helps.
