royalty check = new EQ...but which one for bass gtr?

Hi all,

i music gods have given me a little smile this quarter and i would like to use some of the proceeds to pick up an out board EQ for bass gtr (fender P-Bass). i primarily write hard rock, pop/punk and a little metal for TV.

my budget is around 1100.00

i use the API 500 series lunch box and 512c mic pre's but i use the summit audio 2ba 221 mic pre for my bass and go direct.

i am leaning towards the A Designs EM-PEQ or the API 550A.

before i buy i was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for an outboard eq given the style of music i write. it can be other than a 500 series unit..

many thanks in advance.

Chris

I love API550A's. I would get those, and if you need a Pultec type EQ but don't have the $ for an original, I would check out the Mercury EQ's.

thanks,

what are your thoughts, if you have any on the reissue 550a vs vintage 550a. both are available.

If I could get a vintage 550A with original opamps in great condition I would give it a listen and see if it needed new caps, and if it sounded good and the price was right I would probably buy it over a reissue. I just got a pair of reissues though and they sound good.

API 550A, or Avedis E27 in the 500 series would be good choices...

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

I'd spend the money on a wonderful sounding bass that sounds great without processing.

If you had a bit to spare a new pickup for your bass could work wonders. The Fender US pups are fine, but better pups can be had for not much scratch, and really make a big difference. Go to Basstasters.com and see if something catches your ear.

DW Fearn. No pick ups will do what that bad boy will do to your bass : )

The Chameleon Labs 7602 is a very nice piece for bass. Powerful EQ and very nice DI sound.

Great River EQ 2NV

I wish I had two more of these units...then I'd have 8 channels of this EQ!

I have a Lil Freq here which is superb. It has an instrument DI and output gain. You can use the clean or transformer output.

Brilliant piece and great for vocals too with the built in D-esser/HF limiter
