It's now an Ampex 1" two track machine with Tim DePariverichi (sp?) EAR electronics and head stack on it... yes, I'd say high end since they go for around 15 to 20K!!!

Verrry slutty looking. But even so, I think I'd prefer that the left and right meters were - well... left and right.

Actually, this unit would cost over $28K USD to buy. I recently checked out the pricing of both the 1" 2 track and the custom electronics.

Mike Spitz makes one as well... and of course Dave Hill (Cranesong) does his fabulous Aria electronics for these machines as well in the 1/2 in format... not sure if does them for the 1 inch format as well... | |

Interestingly, MCI figured out that if you run at 20ips you get about 80% of the low end benefits of running at 15ips and about 80% of the noise benefits for running at 30ips. I would guess that Tim's 1" J-37's run at 18 ips because US power is 60Hz [where the EU, and most of the rest of the world runs at 50Hz]. The J-37 used AC motors [most later machines used DC motors] so the line current from the wall is what actually determines the speed of the motors on the machine. Peace.
