How about a stomp-box? I like Diamond Memory Lane.

Also, forgive me mentioning a plug-in, but I've always thought EchoBoy could get close to what you want.

Best of luck.

Don't know the budget, but these are high-end warm organic delays:

Those old tapedelays are often very noisy. There are new and very good models with are way better for studio stuff now like the Fulltone tube tape echo (but you need a reamp & DI module to be able to use it in a studio enviroment) and the Blue Coconut Echoverb

About the only Line6 piece I like is the Echo Pro. Doesn't sound like much on its own, but comes alive in the context of a mix and can sound really warm. It's all dial-in digital, but captures a fair slice of vintage mojo - the one thang they've got it right on.

It's discontinued, but you can be found secondhand. Definitely worthy of a listen.

any tape machine (also a cassette deck) with three heads and varispeed will give you a wonderful delay. if you return it to a channel on the desk and use its aux send for feedback, you have all the options.
use both channels (one after another) for ping pong delays.

if you want digital, AMS or Korg SDD 2000 or 3000 are great.

I love my Carbon Copy Delay. The added semi chorus nutton is cool too.

I own a Bel BD80 and a Symetrix 606 they are both great delays.

A friend of mine has a Mooger Fooger and that is lovely, I plan to get one when I have some disposable income!

The old Ensoniq DP/4 and DP/2 have great delays along with other effects that are fat and warm. Great gear at very good prices right now.
